Fire Fighters Respond To Smoke Detected In Apartment Complex
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department responded to a Sunday evening call at approximately 9:50 p.m. at the East View Apartments located at 1158 7th Avenue Southeast. Smoke was detected emitting from apartment 4 and going into a hallway when fire fighters arrived on the scene. According to Fire Chief Dave Schipper, the cause for the smoke was a pan with food left on the stove’s burner. The resident of the apartment had fallen asleep and was unaware of the stove being left on. Fire fighters were able to use fans to help ventilate the smoke from the apartment complex, and within a few minutes residents were allowed to return to their apartments.
Fire Dept. Holds Annual Awards Banquet – Dreckman Honored As “Fire Fighter Of The Year”
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department held its annual awards banquet Saturday evening at the Willow Creek Golf Club. Michael Dreckman was honored with the Fire Fighter of the Year Award. Dreckman has been with the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department since 2008 when he was a reserve fire fighter. Other awards were presented to Lieutenant Kevin Bolton and Brett Herbold for being certified as fire investigators. Bolton and Herbold recently attended a two-week course studying fires. Captains Brett Dreckman and Mark Hentges were given the Chief’s Award for their three decades of contributing to the fire department. Captain Keith Hettwer and Captain Mark Hentges were presented Lifetime Achievement awards for their long term dedication to the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department. Awards of Appreciation were presented to Ray Wilkens and to Glen Kunkel. Former city councilwoman, Delana Irhke was also so honored for her support of the fire and rescue department. Following the awards ceremony, the gathering enjoyed the comedic and magical illusion tricks performed by Lee Cole.
Akron-Westfield Voters To Decide On School Bond Issue
(Akron) — Voters from Akron and Westfield will have the opportunity on Tuesday to vote on a proposed $6,685,000 bond issue that will go to help upgrade the facilities at the Akron-Westfield School District. Superintendent Randy Collins explains what the 20 year term bond will cover.
This will be the second time voters have seen the measure on a ballot. The bond issue was defeated last September by a slim margin. Collins says the bond needs to pass by a 60 percent majority, and last September it had only 58 percent approval. He says nearly 600 people voted in September.
The Akron-Westfield school superintendent says this time around the bond is being presented to voters in a slightly different manner.
Collins says the upgrade and expanded facilities are needed in order for Akron-Westfield school district to remain competitive.
There will be only one polling place for the bond measure. Voters can cast their votes at the Akron Public Library with polling hours between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Storm Warning Sirens To Be Tested Today
(Le Mars) — Le Mars city storm warning sirens will be tested today at 1:00 p.m., and will be tested each first Monday of the month through November.
Cheryl Wells To Present Leadership Workshop
(Le Mars) — A leadership workshop is being offered Tuesday at the Le Mars Convention Center. The workshop will be led by Cheryl Wells as she instructs attendees of the John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Wells is a certified John Maxwell speaker. Wells says the key to leadership is influence.
Wells says she will have guests speakers address the seminar, or what she refers to as “likeable experts”. She says the workshop will offer attendees the opportunity to do a self-assessment.
Wells says many people mistakenly believe that managing people is the same as leading people. She says a good leader establishes trust and knows how to add value to followers.
Wells further explains her definition and quality traits of a great leader.
Wells will be speaking about John Maxwell’s Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. She says he has devoted his entire life to writing about leadership and is considered by many to be the premier expert when it comes to development of leaders.
The leadership seminar presenter says a key quality to leadership development is having the opportunity to show that you appreciate the people around you and the work they do.

City Announces Spring Clean Up Week
(Le Mars) — Le Mars city officials have announced the week of May 2nd through May 7th as the community spring clean-up week. During that week, the city is declaring an amnesty from the landfill disposal costs. Therefore up to 1000 pounds per household of “throw away” material delivered to the landfill will be paid by the city of Le Mars. The city will not be picking up items at curb side. Only residential properties can participate. The program does not include commercial or industrial properties. Each residential household must make their own arrangements for hauling waste to the Plymouth County Landfill during the amnesty period. Items that can be included as part of the city disposal include: furniture such as couches, chairs, mattresses, carpeting, padding, garden hose, televisions, humidifiers, computers and monitors. Construction and demolition such as wooden items like fence posts, scrap lumber, and items normal to construction and demolition such as windows, doors, sinks, toilets, storms and screens. Metal objects such as bicycles, mowers, metal posts, wire, swings, guttering, bed springs, bed frames can also be disposed. White goods that include household appliances, yard waste, tires and hazardous waste products are not allowed to be disposed during the city wide clean up week.
Sioux City Mother Arrested After She Hits 10 Year Old Son With Trash Can
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Police in Sioux City have arrested a woman they say hit her 10-year-old son with a metal trash can as she fought with her mother.
32-year-old woman was arrested Thursday after the incident. Police say the woman was involved in a fight with her mother around 1 p.m. at her home. When the boy attempted to separate the women, police say, his mother hit him in the head with the trash can.
Police say the boy suffered a large cut on his head and had to be taken to a hospital for treatment.
His mother faces a felony charge of child abuse causing injury.
8 Year Old Pedestrian Hit By Car
(Sergeant Bluff) — Woodbury County deputies and Sergeant Bluff Ambulance were dispatched to the 1400 block of county road D-38 for a traffic crash involving a motor vehicle and an eight year old pedestrian. The accident occurred late Saturday afternoon at about 5:45 p.m. Witnesses say the pedestrian, an 8-year old male child, attempted to cross the roadway from south to north. A vehicle traveling eastbound struck the child in the traveled portion of the roadway. The child was transported to Mercy Medical Center by the Sergeant Bluff Ambulance. The condition and identity of the victim is not being released at this time. No citations were issued. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
