Death Of Child Ruled Accidental
CHEROKEE, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have ruled that the death of an Iowa man
acquitted in the slaying of a 2-year-old girl in 2000 was an accident.
The Iowa medical examiner’s office says Jesse Wendelsdorf, of Cherokee, died of ethylene glycol poisoning. The chemical is the primary ingredient in antifreeze.
Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent Darrell Simmons says antifreeze
was found near Wendelsdorf when he was found March 29. He died two days later at a
Sioux City hospital.
Simmons told the newspaper it’s nearly impossible to say whether Wendelsdorf
wanted to kill himself – he left no note. Simmons says some people drink antifreeze
to get drunk.
Wendelsdorf was acquitted of murder and sexual abuse charges in the January
2000 death of his girlfriend’s daughter.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) – Officials in the southeastern Iowa town of Mount Pleasant say they expect to replace a leaky pipe that has been allowing untreated waste water into a storm sewer that leads to Saunders Branch Creek.
A city crew discovered the leak Wednesday while repairing a nearby line. The crews reported the leak to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The department recommends keeping children and pets away from the creek – especially in Saunders Park – until after repairs are complete.
The city expected to replace the leaky pipe on Thursday.

Powerball Jackpot Continues To Climb
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – No one has matched the jackpot-winning numbers in
Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing, and the prize has increased to an estimated
$478 million.
The next drawing will be Saturday. Nearly three months have passed without a
winner of the big prize.
The chance of winning the Powerball is incredibly small, at 292.2 million-to-
1. But players have much better odds, of about 1 in 25, of winning smaller prizes
ranging from $4 to $1 million.
