Fire Department Responds To Fire At Le Mars Dairy Queen Restaurant

(Le Mars) — Prior to today’s opening of the Dairy Queen restaurant, the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department was called to the Le Mars Dairy Queen for a kitchen fire. The alarm was at about 10:30 a.m. According to Le Mars Fire Chief Dave Schipper, the fire started behind a fryer unit in the kitchen area used for their food preparations.

Schipper says the restaurant will not be able to serve food during today’s lunch hour until it gets approval from the Health Department.

Schipper says the damage sustained due to the fire at the Dairy Queen restaurant was minimal.

Firefighters were on the scene for approximately 45 minutes.

 

 

Woodbury County Voters Approve New Jail, But Monona County Says No To A New Jail

(Sioux City) — A bond issue for one new western Iowa county jail was approved Tuesday, but votes for jail bonds in another county fell short. Woodbury County voters approved a $50.3 million bond issue to replace the existing jail, which officials say is overcrowded and has a number of deficiencies. Voters in neighboring Monona County narrowly rejected a $6.2 million bond issue that would have funded a replacement for the county’s overcrowded, 46-year-old facility. The measure received 57% – 3 percentage points less than the 60% required for passage.

 

 

Former Council Bluffs Police Officer Charged

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A former police officer has been given two years of probation for leaving the scene of a fatal accident with a bicyclist in western Iowa. Pottawattamie County court records say Robert Christensen pleaded guilty Monday. The judge granted Christensen a deferred judgment. Under a deferred judgment, Christensen’s conviction could be removed from his record if he were to successfully complete the terms of his probation. Christensen had retired from the Council Bluffs police force. The May 11 accident fatally injured 55-year-old William Shepard. Authorities say Christensen reported his involvement more than five hours after the accident.

 

 

Cedar Rapids Stabbing

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – Police are investigating the stabbing death of a man in Cedar Rapids. Authorities say officers and medics sent to a residence around 4:25 a.m. Wednesday found the 35-year-old man unresponsive, with a stab wound in the upper torso. The man was pronounced dead later at a hospital. His name hasn’t been released. No arrest has been reported.

 

 

 

Third Defendant Convicted In Burlington Beating Death

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) – A third defendant has been convicted in the kidnapping and beating death of a man at a Burlington apartment complex. Des Moines County court records say a jury found Stanley Baldwin guilty Tuesday of willful injury. The two other defendants were convicted in August. The records say Majestic Malone and Markell Price forced Edward Breuer inside an apartment on March 17 last year after Baldwin accused Breuer of breaking into it. The documents say Malone and Price carried Breuer back outside several minutes later and laid him in the dirt before Price poured a can of soda over Breuer’s head.

 

 

Inmate Serving Life Sentence Dies At Hospital

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) – Officials say a prisoner serving a life sentence for murder died Wednesday morning at a southeast Iowa hospital. Everett Lyon was pronounced dead due to natural causes at 3:58 a.m. at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. He’d been sent there for a suspected heart attack. The Iowa Corrections Department says Lyon was 71. Lyon was convicted of first-degree murder in Marshall County. Prison records say Lyon had been serving his time at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. His incarceration began on April 10, 1979.
