(Le Mars) — On Friday evening during a concert, the Le Mars Community School District surprised a music teacher by naming him the “Teacher Of The Year”.

Randy Ewing was presented the honor. Ewing was awarded the annual Decades of Excellence Crystal Bell award. Ewing has served the Le Mars Community School District as its high school vocal music teacher for the past 15 years.
Ewing’s nomination was coordinated by parent Christy McInnis and her son, Jack McInnis, and supported by colleagues and other students of Mr. Ewing.
The Decades of Excellence Crystal Bell award is co-sponsored by the Le Mars Community School District Foundation and the Le Mars Community School Alumni Association. The award is presented annually to honor outstanding teachers who have dedicated their careers to the education of our children.

(Le Mars) — KLEM radio reported that Randy Ewing, the high school vocal music instructor was awarded the honor of “Teacher of the Year” Friday evening during a high school music concert. We now have been able to visit with Mr. Ewing and discuss his thoughts upon receiving the high honor. Ewing says he was surprised by the unexpected honor, and says it is humbling to be
so recognized.

For the last 15 years, Ewing has taught vocal music at Le Mars Community, but he has 28 years total of teaching music.

Ewing reflects back on the time he first realized he wanted to teach music.

Education and government officials usually like to emphasize a STEM curriculum, consisting of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Ewing says music is also important as it intertwines with many of those educational platforms.

He says his educational philosophy is to help any student, regardless of degree of talent, to understand and appreciate music.

The Le Mars Community High School vocal music instructor says students who are involved with music usually score better in other academic fields.

Our congratulations go to Randy Ewing for being recognized as the Le Mars Community School District’s “Teacher of the Year.”
