Akron-Westfield Opens District Play with a Win – Coach John Sievert Records First Win

The Akron-Westfield football team recorded win number one for head coach John Sievert with a 45-18 drubbing of Sibley-Ocheyedan opening district play in Akron on Friday night.

The Westerners were coming off a game in which they were one-yard short on a two-point conversion from beating Ridge View. Coach Sievert says they learned some things from that game that helped get them in the right space for this week.

The Westerners improved tremendously from week one to week two on the offensive end. The Westerners record 237 yards of offense and six points in their loss to Ridge View. Against the Generals, Akron-Westfield scored 45 points with nearly 400 yards of offense. Coach Sievert attributes that to the work put in to get the offensive line some more reps in practice this past week.

The Westerner defense also came to play recording an astounding four turnovers and holding Sibley-Ocheyedan scoreless for the final two and a half quarters. This came after forcing no turnovers last week against Ridge View. Coach Sievert says those turnovers this week were ultimately the difference in improving the outcome on defense.

The Westerners step out of district play for the last time this year when they head south to the Held Sports Complex for a date with Hinton. Coach Sievert says if the Westerners continue to do their job, the success will follow.

Akron-Westfield now sits 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the district after the win while Sibley-Ocheyedan dropped to 0-2 and 0-1 in district play with the loss.
