Carter Wilken wins War Eagle Conference Title with strong showing in playoff holes

Carter Wilken has been the top golfer all season for the Akron-Westfield boys golf team. He proved that again on Monday winning the individual War Eagle Conference title via the playoff hole at the conference meet at Willow Creek Golf Course in Le Mars.

Wilken shot a 77 to enter into a three-way tie for first when the tournament wrapped up. He says his best trait this season has come from his ability to keep control of what he can control and take advantage of the opportunities in front of him.

The three-way tie comprised of some strong golfers in teammate Jackson Marnach and Gehlen Catholic’s Dawson Barthole. Wilken says he was trying to wait for a mistake to take advantage and win the tournament.

On the second playoff hole, Wilken launched his drive past the green to the fringe on the back side. His chip shot put him within inches of the hole that led to an easy tap-in for the win. Wilken says he knew that chip was golden when it left his club head.

The best part of Wilken’s game is that he is not satisfied with the individual accolades. The Westerners are trying to get back to the state meet this season, and Wilken says it is going to take all golfers doing their part to trim a few strokes down to get that done.

Akron-Westfield finished second as a team in the conference tournament with a 322. They have a chance to win the War Eagle Conference with their final home dual of the year on Thursday against George-Little Rock.
