The Gehlen Catholic baseball team struggled in a pair of doubleheader losses to West Lyon in Larchwood on Saturday. The Jays dropped the first game 12-6 and the second game 17-6 in five innings.
The Jays were within a run of West Lyon throughout the majority of the first game. The Wildcats then scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth in game one and six runs in the bottom of the first in game two that kept the Jays down for good. Head coach Loi Kraft says the Jays found out how mentally taxing the game of baseball can be, and that it is important to address that to be mentally tougher later.
Those two six-run innings were capped off by a nine-run third inning in game two leading to a lot of crooked numbers on the board for the Jays. Coach Kraft says one little thing would turn the water on to a flood of runs by West Lyon.
At the plate, the Jays could not consistently figure out their approach at the plate. One inning would be a couple of runs then a couple of scoreless innings, and that was the theme for the whole day. Coach Kraft says his guys have to be better at reading the pitches as they are thrown.
The Jays have four games during the week and end the week at the annual Spalding Catholic tournament in Granville. To get things back on the right track, Coach Kraft says fundamentals need to be hammered home this week.
Gehlen Catholic dropped to 5-7 on the season with the two losses. West Lyon improved to 7-1 on the season.
