Remsen St. Mary’s Softball drops consolation matchup with No. 2 Wayne

The Remsen St. Mary’s softball team ended their season in a consolation matchup at the state tournament with a loss to No. 2 Wayne by a score of 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks gave up a couple of big innings early on to the tune of two Wayne runs in the first and six Wayne runs in the third. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Monte Harpenau says he knew that the Falcons were capable of big innings.

Remsen St. Mary’s did have something big to cheer about in the top of the fifth inning. Claire Schroeder blasted a home run to give the Hawks their only run. Coach Harpenau was happy to see Schroeder end her high school career with a bang.

In the five years that the senior class has competed, the Hawks have gone 107-17 reaching the state tournament four times and winning a consolation game. It is an impressive record line for a senior class that Coach Harpenau says were great players but even better leaders.

The cupboard will not be bare though for Remsen St. Mary’s. The Hawks got a chance to see Josie Schwickerath pitch in the consolation game, and Coach Harpenau says that will only be a minor piece coming back to a good team.

The Hawks end the season with a record of 23-2 and finish the state tournament officially in a tie for seventh place.
