The Le Mars Community volleyball team punched their ticket to the next round of the regional tournament with a straight-set sweep of Spencer on Tuesday night.
The win was much-needed on a couple of fronts. Obviously, the win was necessary to keep the season alive, but the Bulldogs just needed some confidence too. Le Mars had lost 11 matches in a row heading into the tournament. Head coach Jess Wolles says the girls were working hard throughout the losing streak, and it was nice to see them get in the win column.
Le Mars cruised in the win taking their three sets by scores of 25-8, 25-12, and 25-17. Set one finished with Le Mars scoring each and every one of the final 10 points in the set. Coach Wolles says the girls were confident, and that allowed them to be aggressive.
The Bulldogs were led on the offensive side by Holly McNaughton who finished with 12 kills and a majority of those came in third set. Coach Wolles says her leadership and versatility make her a great player to have on the floor.
Le Mars is now set to rematch with second-ranked Bishop Heelan in the regional semifinals. The Bulldogs have yet to take a set from the Crusaders this season, but Coach Wolles is hopeful that some new wrinkles can give them a better chance against them in the tournament.
First serve in that matchup will be at 7:00 PM on Thursday night in Sioux City. KLEM will broadcast the match live with coverage beginning at 6:45.
