The Gehlen Catholic boys capped off a busy week with a convincing home win over Akron-Westfield on Friday night by the score of 50-26.
The game was tight after one quarter with each side trading blows, and the Jays leading 12-10. Akron-Westfield head coach Steven Husk says it was nice to see the guys get off to a strong start.
After playing a back and forth first quarter, Gehlen Catholic did not mess around in the second frame. The Jays outscored the Westerners 18-0 to take a 20-point lead into the locker room at halftime. Gehlen Catholic head coach Ryan Wiltgen says that was largely spurred by the defense.
The difference for Akron-Westfield was simply due to the ball not moving around well. The Westerners turned the ball over too many times because of that. Coach Husk the guys have to take better care of the ball moving forward.
Meanwhile, Gehlen Catholic was pulling away, but they were not doing so at the efficiency they would have liked. The Jays were under 30% from the three-point arch and under 50% from the free throw line. Coach Wiltgen says his guys were a little fatigued leading to some low-energy possessions.
Akron-Westfield drops to 1-2 with the loss under new leadership. The game was disappointing for the Westerners, but there is not much they can do about it now. Coach Husk says the guys have to move forward so they can continue to make improvements.
Gehlen Catholic starts off the season 3-1 after the first week of play. Coach Wiltgen says they are far from a perfect team though. He says the guys have to do a better job of running the offense to have success.
Gehlen Catholic is next in action on Tuesday at Hinton. The Westerners head to Kingsley today to take on Kingsley-Pierson.
