Hinton boys basketball cleans up offensive glass in win over Gehlen Catholic

The Hinton boys basketball team won their second-straight game with a 56-36 win over Gehlen Catholic in Hinton on Tuesday night.

Hinton got off and rolling right away going on an 11-0 run early in the first quarter and never looking back the rest of the game. Hinton head coach John Spies says his guys were eager to get the offense moving quickly, and that is what they did.

The killer for Gehlen Catholic was their rebounding. The Jays allowed Hinton to pull down 15 offensive rebounds leading to numerous second chances. Gehlen Catholic head coach Ryan Wiltgen says a necessary defensive switch led to the unfortunate rebounding effort.

That rebounding edge was something that Hinton prepared for heading into the game. Coach Spies says he was happy to see the guys execute on that gameplan.

Hinton was very balanced offensively with three guys scoring in double figures. Gehlen Catholic was not needing to get half of their offense from Mason Small who scored 18 of their 36 points on the night. Coach Wiltgen says Small took advantage of some lapses in Hinton’s defense.

Gehlen Catholic drops to 3-2 with the loss. Coach Wiltgen says getting the guys to play like they did last week will be crucial with two big games ahead of them still this week.

Hinton will take a 2-1 record into a big conference opener on Friday night against an undefeated MMCRU squad. Coach Spies says the guys need to be ready to be quick moving offensively again on Friday night.

Gehlen Catholic is next in action on Thursday night in Orange City at Unity Christian. You can listen to the game on KLEM.
