No. 11 Hinton girls basketball pulls away early in win over Gehlen Catholic

The No. 11 Hinton girls basketball team kept their perfect record in tact defeating Gehlen Catholic 63-26 on Tuesday night in Hinton.

Hinton did not waste any time on getting off to a strong start leading it 9-0 after the first two minutes and taking a 17-0 lead into the second quarter. Hinton head coach Matt Leary says that strong start was predicated on their great defense.

The Jays may not have always been turning over the ball in the first frame, but their offense was certainly impacted. Gehlen Catholic head coach Brandon Schaecher says the girls just could not get their offense fully running to start the game.

As the game progressed, Hinton’s lead grew getting up to 30 points at the end of the first half. That can be hard on a team to try and deal with. Coach Schaecher says his girls struggled with confidence when things got tough, but they never gave up.

At this point, Hinton could have mailed it in and stopped trying in the second half, but they did not do that. Coach Leary says his team is never going to give up trying no matter the score.

Gehlen Catholic dropped to 3-4 with the loss. This is the fourth ranked team the Jays have played to start the year, and there will certainly be more. Coach Schaecher says games like this one can be beneficial because it shows the Jays just what they need to be better at in the future.

The Blackhawks are now 5-0 on the season. Hinton brought in a lot of new transfers this year, and they have meshed really well. Coach Leary says that needs to continue for the team to have success when it comes to the little things.

Gehlen Catholic takes on Unity Christian in Orange City on Thursday in a game you can hear on KLEM. Hinton starts conference play on Friday at home against MMCRU.
