The sport of girls wrestling continues to expand in its third year of sanctioned competition in Iowa. Akron-Westfield became the newest girls wrestling program in our area this season with their first year of sanctioned competition underway. While the program is new, the athletes in it are not all new to the sport of wrestling. Akron-Westfield head coach Chris Utesch says he has seen state qualifier Josilynne Lennon and others helping lead the new wrestlers early in the season.
The program at Akron-Westfield is setting up for the long run with early interest at the high school level. That then leads to interest at the youth level to keep the program thriving. Coach Utesch says he is excited for what the future of the program holds.
Being a new team means there will be struggles early on. That has been the case for the Westerners this season, but they are continuing to show improvement. Coach Utesch says for that improvement to continue, the Westerners just need to get on the mat and wrestle people.
Akron-Westfield is back in action on Friday when they head to Luverne, Minnesota for a tournament.
