A top-ten boys basketball battle went the way of No. 8 MMCRU by a 33-32 final score over No. 3 Remsen St. Mary’s on Friday night in Marcus.
The MMCRU boys basketball team has never beaten Remsen St. Mary’s during their whole grade sharing agreement era. The last time one of the school districts beat the Hawks was February 4, 2014 when Remsen-Union beat the Hawks. MMCRU head coach Cam Kuchel says it was a very special win for his team.
The game turned into a defensive slugfest with outside shots being very tough to come by. That meant inside scoring was going to have to take over. Brayson Mulder led the Royals with 17 points and Collin Homan scored 20 of RSM’s 32 points. Mulder says the battle was tough with Homan all game.
Coach Kuchel says his guys did a really good job of playing tough defense in the half court making it hard for the Hawks to get into their offense.
The game ultimately came down to one free throw with three seconds left in the game. Mulder was at the line for it, and he put it away to give the Royals the win. Mulder says he was nervous at the end but knew he could get the job done.
The Royals improve to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the War Eagle Conference with the win. Coach Kuchel says if the defensive intensity continues, the Royals will be sitting good all year.
MMCRU is back in action tonight at home against OABCIG. Remsen St. Mary’s fell to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the War Eagle Conference. The Hawks are at top-ranked Western Christian tonight in Hull.
