Gehlen Catholic girls golf posts season-best score to win Le Mars Girls Invitational

The Gehlen Catholic girls golf team won the Le Mars Community girls invitational on Friday afternoon shooting a season-best 191 in the nine-hole tournament.

The Jays were playing in their first non-War Eagle Conference meet of the season, and that may have helped them. Head coach Jen Kurth says the girls were incredibly loose during the tournament.

Rysaiah Sitzmann has been the straw that stirs the drink for the Jays early in the season. Gehlen Catholic just got some help for her in the form of Sherry Jo Wittkop who had to miss most of the preseason due to a surgery related to the cancer she has dealt with for over a year. Coach Kurth says Wittkop has been playing very well considering everything she is going through.

The win for Gehlen Catholic is even more impressive considering they were the smallest school by a considerable amount. The Jays took on the likes of Sioux City East, Denison-Schleswig, Bishop Heelan, and others and were able to defeat them all. Coach Kurth says the girls were nervous at first, but they calmed down and played a great tournament.

Gehlen Catholic now has many meets in a short time span over the next couple of weeks. Coach Kurth says this will be a challenging time for her team, but they are going to have to push through it.

The Jays are back in action on Tuesday at home against Remsen St. Mary’s.
