The Akron-Westfield boys golf team punched a ticket to their third state tournament in four years with a third-place finishing score of 341 in Le Mars on Monday.
When the meet started, it was not looking likely that the Westerners were going to get back to state. As the meet went on, that outlook changed, and the scores started coming down. Head coach Steven Husk says everyone needed to make a strong push to the finish, and they did that.
After a lot of question marks to start the year with dual-sport athletes, a new coach, and a new core to work around, there were some doubts early on in the year. Coach Husk says the guys grew significantly as the season progressed.
Improvement is still a priority for the Westerners even heading into their final meet of the season. Coach Husk says the trip to Waterloo will be successful if the Westerners can bring their scores down from where they start after their district performance.
The Westerners will compete at the state meet in Waterloo at South Hills Golf Course on May 27 and May 28.
