State Trooper Uses Defibrillator on RAGBRAI Rider; Man Sent to Hospitals in Orange City and Sioux City
An Iowa State Patrol trooper used an automated external defibrillator or AED, to come to the aid of a rider on the first day of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, says a RAGBRAI spokesperson.
The man from California had no pulse as medics from RAGBRAI’s private ambulance service administered CPR yesterday, according to Iowa State Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Alex Dinkla. Dinkla said a trooper handling an intersection crossing in the vicinity was summoned to the scene with an AED which troopers routinely carry in their cruisers.
Once the officer showed up, Dinkla says, they administered a shock with the AED, and shortly thereafter they detected a pulse.
The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Orange City, where the Day 1 ride began. He was later taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Sioux City, where late Sunday afternoon he was “alert, conscious and receiving medical care,” Dinkla said.
This is the third RAGBRAI in which troopers have carried AEDs in their cars, and the second life they’ve saved on RAGBRAI during that time, he said.

Dordt University Atrium Dining Hall

Dordt University says construction on its new dining hall and banquet area continues this week.
Dordt’s newly constructed dining commons and banquet hall are called The Atrium and The Overlook. Robert Taylor is Dordt’s Vice President for Student Success and Dean of Students. Taylor says both areas are designed to be vibrant hubs where students and visitors can gather, connect, and experience the beauty of campus in fresh and meaningful ways
Walking through the dusty, noisy construction zone where the student cafeteria was being built this summer, Taylor said the school kept student feedback in mind when planning the new cafeteria.
Taylor pointed out a large area dedicated to dealing with the most common allergies of Dordt students and helping them avoid certain foods.
Taylor noted that although the new cafeteria, dining hall and banquet area were expensive to build, and were funded by donations, the school is not allowing tuition dollars to pay for those projects.

The Atrium dining hall is a large indoor space bounded by windows on each side and it leads upstairs to the second story where the Overlook banqueting space is being built.

Taylor hopes that the school will be able to start operating the cafeteria this week, and that athletes will be the first to take part in a whole new dining experience at Dordt.
Dordt University is also adding an on-campus coffee shop complete with baristas next to the cafeteria, and a large, open space with benches next to large windows that let in the sunshine.

Dordt is adding seating and light to the outdoor environment and is adding new classroom and dorm rooms to the school, to meet the needs of additional students this fall.
