Opening Weekend at Eden Valley

Its opening weekend for apple picking at Eden Valley Apple Orchard near Akron.

 

Tony Heisterkamp says Eden Valley is an all-natural orchard, meaning they don’t spray the trees with pesticides or herbicides. He says there are many varieties for eating and cooking.

 

He says there was a big crop of apples this year and still lots to pick even after the recent high winds.

 

Hours for opening weekend are today (Saturday) from 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 till 5 p.m.

Eden Valley Apple Orchard is located at 30935 482nd Avenue, Akron, Iowa.

Melbourne United Methodist Church Anniversary

The oldest church in Plymouth County is celebrating its 165th anniversary tomorrow. The Melbourne United Methodist Church near Hinton is holding a special anniversary celebration tomorrow at 10:30am.

A combined service will be held with the Hinton United Methodist Church, including speakers from the Iowa Methodist Church Conference. Lunch will be held after the service with taverns from Bob’s Drive Inn, and a concert held by pianist and soloist Chandler Todd will start at 1:00pm.

The Melbourne United Methodist Church is one of the oldest buildings in Plymouth County, and the only remaining building from the former town of Melbourne.

Big Sioux Outdoor Expo

There’s a fun afternoon planned for tomorrow (Sunday, September 7th) at River’s Bend Wildlife Area near Akron.

Join experts and outdoor enthusiasts as Plymouth County Conservation invites you to this free event. It runs from noon till 4 p.m. Sunday, featuring fishing, kayaking, archery, and demonstrations.

There will also be vendors and food trucks on site. Kayaks and canoes will be available, along with fishing poles and bait, plus ranges for archery and BB guns. Demonstrations will teach how to cook on a campfire and fillet a fish among other things.

This event is open to the public and no pre-registration is required. River’s Bend Wildlife Area is located at 11826 180th Street, Akron, Iowa.

New Zamboni at Sioux Center’s Vernon Arena

Skaters at Sioux Center’s Vernon Arena will notice a new Zamboni at the area this fall. The new machine is replacing the original Zamboni that’s been in operation since the All Seasons Center opened 22 years ago.

The new Zamboni has better ice-making and leveling capabilities, and new safety features that will improve the quality of ice for skaters. The Sioux Center Youth Hockey Association, Dordt University, and the City of Sioux Center paid for the new Zamboni.

Fans and skaters will be able to see the new Zamboni when open skate begins tomorrow, and throughout the hockey season.
