Kingsley-Pierson girls basketball starts season with complete win over Gehlen Catholic

The Kingsley-Pierson girls basketball team opened their season with convincing 72-50 victory over Gehlen Catholic in Le Mars on Monday night.

The Panthers played a complete game for their season-opener forcing Gehlen to turn the ball over, creating scoring chances, and moving the ball well. Kingsley-Pierson head coach Nicole Goodwin says it went as well as she could have asked.

Gehlen Catholic was the team that got off to a strong start taking a lead into the second quarter. They were able to build that lead early on with confident scoring from Ayla Schmidt who had 10 points in the first quarter. Head coach Brandon Schaecher says he has been looking for that start out of his team for a while.

As the game progressed, it was clear that the Panther defense was starting to suffocate the Jay offense. Coach Goodwin says her team has had to battle through some things off the court making their battles on the court that much easier.

Coach Schaecher says the experience the Panthers bring did not help his younger team figure things out quickly.

With the loss, Gehlen Catholic starts the year 0-1. Coach Schaecher says his team did a lot of good things that can give them some early momentum in the new season.

Kingsley-Pierson opens up at 1-0 with the victory. Coach Goodwin says this game is a great foundation to build upon as the season continues.

Ayla Schmidt led Gehlen Catholic with 15 points while Kingsley-Pierson was led by Julia Howe who scored 14 points.
