Gehlen Catholic defeats Remsen St. Mary’s boys basketball in emotional home-opener

The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team helped continue their undefeated start to the season with a 51-27 win over Remsen St. Mary’s on Tuesday night in Le Mars.

For Remsen St. Mary’s, it was their first competition since the tragic bus accident that injured three girls basketball athletes. Remsen St. Mary’s co-head coach Justin Ruden says it was great for things to get back to normal for a couple of hours.

That normal continued onto the basketball floor with Remsen St. Mary’s playing some tight defense over the first few minutes. That forced Gehlen Catholic to adjust to get what they needed on offense. Gehlen head coach Eric Kellen says that adjustment worked out for his team.

With the expanded opportunities and looks from the outside, Dylan Lubben took the bull by the horns scoring 14 points and hitting four three-pointers. Coach Kellen says he was looking for Lubben to be a leader, and he stepped up big.

As the Jays continued to exploit the outside shot, it became tougher for the Hawks to stage a comeback. Coach Ruden says things got a little sloppy for his guys.

The Hawks will have a full seven days to get prepared for their next game vs West Sioux on December 9. Coach Ruden says a lot of that will be focused on sharpening things on offense.

Gehlen Catholic will get ready for two more games this week against some tough competition. Coach Kellen says it will be important to pace the guys early in the season while also accomplishing some things in practice.

Remsen St. Mary’s was led by Tyten Waldschmitt who scored nine points for the now 0-1 Hawks. Gehlen Catholic improves to 2-0 with the win.
