Red’s Printing Company sold to new ownership

Le Mars-based Red’s Printing Company has announced a change in ownership, with Maggie Catton taking over from previous owners John and Pam Hutchins effective January 1st. The announcement was made in a press release on Monday morning.

In the release, the Hutchins stated they were thankful for the four decades of community support they’ve received, and asked the community to continue to “choose local” for their printing and signage needs. The release states that Catton is “honored” to join the team, and looks forward to maintaining the same service customers expect, with no immediate operational changes planned.

The Hutchins had owned the company since 1983, when John purchased the business from his father, Dean. Since then, Red’s Printing grew from a small local print shop into a regional business for printing and signage, with the release highlighting that the company will continue to provide the same services while “thoughtfully exploring new products and opportunities.”

The transition in ownership will start today, and will be completed by January 1st.

Le Mars city council to meet tomorrow, appreciation event to be held for Goodchild

The Le Mars city council will meet tomorrow afternoon for their final meeting of 2025, and the final council meeting for Clark Goodchild, who will end his 12-year tenure on the council at the end of the month.

Agenda items listed for tomorrow includes approving a services agreement for the development of city-owned land east of 7th Avenue SE, and approving a new two-year contract between the city and city employees concerning wages. The council will also go over feedback received from citizens concerning the Business Highway 75 reconstruction project, but won’t consider the design itself at this time.

Prior to tomorrow’s meeting, an “Appreciation Coffee” event will take place in honor of outgoing councilman Clark Goodchild. Goodchild is retiring after serving for 12 years on the city council, with councilman-elect Derek Conyers filling his seat on December 30th. The “Appreciation Coffee” will be held inside of the city council’s chambers starting at 11am.

The next meeting of the city council will take place on January 6th at noon.

Iowans will be dashing through the snow to get sand, sun, surf

It’s one of the snowiest Decembers in years and record numbers of Iowans are predicted to leave the state for the year-end holidays to thaw out someplace warm. Triple-A-Iowa spokesman Brian Ortner says the forecast for the seven-state region that includes Iowa shows more than nine-million residents will be traveling between December 20th and January 1st. That’s a one-percent increase from last year, while the national figures are up more than two-percent.

Four of the top ten domestic destinations for the holidays are in Florida, along with other sunny cities like Honolulu, Maui, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Ortner says the preferences are starting to change for international travel.

While most Iowans who are traveling for the holidays will be going by motor vehicle, those who are flying can expect to pay more for their plane tickets.

Iowans who will be driving to their holiday destinations should be spending less, he says, when stopping to fill the tank.

The statewide average for gasoline is now two-52 a gallon, compared to the state average a year ago of two-70, and the current national average price of two-94.
