Luxembourg Heritage Society to welcome foreign visitors, former diplomat to Remsen
Three visitors, including two from the country of Luxembourg, will be welcomed to Remsen with a pizza buffet on Thursday by the Luxembourg Heritage Society of Northwest Iowa.
Marc Zimer, coordinator of the student exchange of Remsen St. Mary’s students with a school in Luxembourg; Carlo Krieger, former Luxembourg ambassador to China, Russia and Brazil; and Travis Gross, executive director of the Luxembourg American Cultural Society in Belgium, WI, will be guests of the Society at the buffet, which will be held at Beer City in Remsen from 5:30-7:00pm on Thursday. Zimer is a physics teacher in Luxembourg, while Krieger served as an ambassador for 18 years in addition to holding several other posts, and Gross has led the Luxembourg American Cultural Society since August of 2025.
Zimer has visited Remsen several times since the beginning of the student exchange program, where St. Mary’s students meet via ZOOM with students from Attert-Lycee in Redange, Luxembourg. About one-third of the students from St. Mary’s High School belong to the Luxembourg Club, while the Attert-Lycee school, grades 7-13 has about 1,200 students. Plans are being made for exchanges between the two schools, with Luxembourg students visiting Remsen and St. Mary’s students visiting Luxembourg for a few weeks.
All are welcome to attend the pizza buffet, with pizza and soft drinks available for a free will donation.

1st Street SE closed for two weeks
The City of Le Mars Street Department has announced that a section of 1st Street SE will be closed for repairs starting on Monday.
The affected section is located between 1st Avenue SE and 2nd Avenue SE, next to the Wells North Ice Cream Plant. Street supervisor Scott Kneip stated that the closure is due to repairs to the roof of the plant, with the repairs expected to take around two weeks, weather permitting.

State Regulators ready to review proposed casino sale
Iowa Racing and Gaming Administrator Tina Eick says they have been contacted about the interest of Churchill Downs in potentially selling off their regional casinos including the Hard Rock in Sioux City. Eick says the state would have the final say if there is a sale.
Eick says the new owner would start off like every other owner.
She says that is an extensive review of the owners and their finances.
Eick says they are currently in that process for the sale of the Caesars Entertainment casinos in Iowa.
That sale would include the Horshoe in Council Bluffs, Harrah’s in Council Bluffs and the Isle Casinoes in Bettendorf and Waterloo.
