The Gehlen Catholic football team is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2017 after a 36-21 victory at Sioux Central on Friday night.
While the Jays managed to put up 30 points in the first half, they still did not put together their best half of football. The Jays turned the ball over on their first series and proceeded to give up a score right afterwards. Head coach Jeremy Schindler says he needs some better starts out of his team.
Overall, the Gehlen Catholic offense did some great things totaling 354 yards of total offense on the night. Coach Schindler says he knew the offense would be a strong suit going into the game.
Drake Kneip was the beneficiary of a lot of the offensive plays in the passing attack. He caught four passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Coach Schindler says that was a part of the Sioux Central defense that they could exploit.
After allowing 15 points in the first half, the Jays settled in on defense to allow just one scoring drive in the second half. Coach Schindler says it took a brief adjustment to get things pointed back in the right direction.
With homecoming on the way, the Jays will look to stay unbeaten against a solid Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn team. Coach Schindler says his guys have been good at putting the extra homecoming stuff in the back of their mind and focusing on the game.
Gehlen Catholic and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn kick off at 7:00 PM on Friday night at Jim Lorenzen Field in Le Mars.
