City Closes Park Lane For Preparations For Guard Rail
(Le Mars) — The city of Le Mars has announced Park Lane is closed today, (Thursday) beginning at 11:30 a.m. The street will remain closed for approximately three hours as a contractor will be digging holes and pouring concrete base for a new guardrail.
Le Mars Police Department Releases Quarterly Report
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Police Department has issued its third quarter report. In the report, the number of calls for service had risen 100 percent. The numbers from 2017 was listed at 1,745. This year the number of calls for service was 3,498. Traffic citations and warnings are up 79 percent, at 251 citations and warnings at 568. The arrests were at 149 compared to 114 from a year ago. Community Police Contacts were at 557
compared to 178 contacts from the third quarter in 2017. According to the police report, total activities were up ten percent from the second quarter of 2018, and up 100 percent from the last year’s third quarter report.
Northwestern College To Dedicate New Science Center
(Orange City) — Northwestern College of Orange City will hold ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremonies on its new $24.5 million science center Friday afternoon.
Greg Christy, the college’s president says the new Jack and Mary DeWitt Family Science Center three-story, 61,000 square feet building will house the college’s nursing, biology, chemistry, and bio-chemistry programs. Christy says thanks to donations and trust funds, the new science center is already paid in full.
Christy says the new facility will house Northwestern’s growing nursing education program, as well as the expanding genetics curriculum, and it will have all of the science faculty in one location.
The Northwestern College president says the building features state-of-the-art laboratory and research facilities, and will better prepare those students who wish to pursue a health-related career.
Christy says the architecture of the building features several glass walls, allowing people to view the classrooms.
The dedication ceremonies will begin at 4:00 p.m. Public tours of the new Jack and Mary DeWitt Family Science Center will occur following the dedication ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Abortion Rights Groups Ask Judge To Rule “Heartbeat Law” As Unconstitutional
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Lawyers for two abortion providers have asked an Iowa judge to forgo a trial and rule that the state’s fetal heartbeat law is unconstitutional.
The Des Moines Register reports that lawyers for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and the Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City filed a motion Monday that cites the Iowa Supreme Court’s June decision to strike down a 72-hour
waiting period to obtain an abortion. The high court said the state’s women have a fundamental right to abortion protected by the state constitution.
The fetal heartbeat law would ban nearly all abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can occur about six weeks into a pregnancy and often before a woman realizes she’s pregnant. The law hasn’t taken effect, pending the litigation’s outcome.
Lawyers representing the state have not yet responded to the motion filed Monday. Nor has the judge indicated when he will rule on it.

Dispute Over Maime Eisenhower’s Home Should Be Sold
BOONE, Iowa (AP) – A dispute over whether to sell the birthplace of former first lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower has led to a lawsuit and mismanagement allegations.
Former members of the Boone County Historical Society filed a lawsuit Friday against the nonprofit. The lawsuit is seeking an injunction to block the nonprofit’s sale of the home, which
has since been turned into a museum.
The lawsuit says the historical society announced last year that it
planned to close the home to focus efforts on other projects.
Mara MacKay is the historical society’s former executive director and a defendant in the lawsuit. She volunteers at the organization after being terminated due to lack of funds. MacKay says the home is no longer for sale and the organization will need to find other ways to raise revenue.

Man Dies From Fall From Rigging Theater Lights
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say a man died after he fell while rigging a stage at a fine arts center in Davenport.
Timothy Cook fell Wednesday morning while working on the stage at the Galvin Fine Arts Center on the St. Ambrose University campus. Police say he died shortly after arriving at a Davenport hospital.
The 45-year-old lived in Davenport.
