MONDAY RESULTS – May 24

(girls golf)

The Hinton girls finished second at the girls 1A Regionals in Treynor and qualified for the State Tournament in June.

At Spencer, Gehlen’s Mollie Nemmers finished tenth with a 98 and did not qualify for the State meet.  Likewise, Remsen-Union finished out of the money and their season ended Monday.

Denison Schleswig 8 Le Mars 2

(LE MARS) — Denison-Schleswig scored four runs on five hits in the seventh inning to break open a tight game as the Monarchs beat Le Mars 8-2 on opening night at the Bulldog Complex.  Keaton Rowe’s two-out, bases-loaded two-run double in the sixth trimmed a 4-0 deficit to two for the Bulldogs before the Monarchs’ big seventh inning eruption sealed the deal.  Le Mars hitters struckout 14 times in the game and had only four hits.

Sioux City East 10 Le Mars 0, 5 innings

(SIOUX CITY) — Michaela Weaver limited Le Mars to one hit and Sioux City East scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn a tight game into a rout as East won 10-0 Monday in the season opener for both.  Kelby Klein’s fifth inning single was the lone hit for the Lady Bulldogs.

TUESDAY RESULTS – May 25

Gehlen (1-0/1-0) 12 Akron-Westfield 9

Le Mars (1-1) 11 Sioux Center 4

(AKRON) — Zach Wurth drilled a two-run single with two-outs in the top of the seventh inning after fouling off seven pitches to stay alive at the plate and the Gehlen rallied for six runs in their last at-bat to beat Akron-Westfield 12-9 in the season opener for both teams.  Devon Groenhagen got the win in relief.  Mitch Christoffel had three hits for the Jays.

(SIOUX CENTER) — Tanner Dowling drove in five runs and Keaton Rowe added a three-run triple to pace the Le Mars Bulldogs to an 11-4 victory at Sioux Center.  Chris Eckstaine worked the first four innings to get the win, allowing one hit, six walks and striking out eight.

Akron-Westfield 5 Gehlen 1 (0-1/0-1)

(AKRON) — Jordan Harris threw a four-hitter and struck out nine and Sarah Parkinson belted a two-run homer in her first at-bat of the season to lead Akron-Westfield to a 5-1 victory over Gehlen.  Lexi Wiltgen took the loss despite allowing only five hits.  Steph Rohe had two hits for the Lady Jays.

WEDNESDAY RESULTS – May 26

Gehlen (2-0/2-0) 9 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 6

(LE MARS) — For the second straight night Gehlen rallied late in the game to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.  The Jays rallied for six runs in the fifth inning Wednesday night to wipe out a 5-1 deficit enroute to a 9-6 win over visiting Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.  Shaun Ryan had two hits and drove in two runs for the Jays.

Gehlen (1-1/1-1) 14 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 2, 3 innings

(LE MARS) — The Gehlen girls picked up their first win of the young season, rapping out 14 hits in a 14-2 romp over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in War Eagle softball action Wednesday night at the Riverview Complex.  Amber Timmins had three hits and a pair of RBI’s.  Bre Kraus drove in three runs.  Alexis Wiltgen threw a two-hitter for the Lady Jays.

THURSDAY RESULTS – May 27

Le Mars (2-1) 7 Central Lyon 6

(ROCK RAPIDS) — Tanner Dowling went 3-for-3 with a triple and double and drove in a run to lead Le Mars to a come-from-behind 7-6 victory at Central Lyon.  Judd Herzberg had a two-run homer in the sixth inning to key the Bulldogs’ comeback.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton 4 Gehlen (1-2/1-2) 2

(SHELDON) — Emily Ellefson drove in three runs to support a four-hit pitching effort by Jordan Heidebrink and Le Mars won their first game of the year 8-1 at Sheldon.  Kelby Klein and Erica Westhoff led a ten-hit attack with three hits each.

(LE MARS) — Sergeant Bluff-Luton handed Gehlen a 4-2 loss at the Riverview Complex Thursday to drop the Lady Jays to 1-and-2 heading into Saturday’s Kingsley-Pierson Invitational.  Sarah Jentz had three of Gehlen’s seven hits.

FRIDAY RESULTS – May 28

(boys Tennis)

1A STATE TOURNAMENT at Byrnes Park in Waterloo
Le Mars’ Mike Ahlers lost his first round match 6-1, 6-2 to top-seeded Jim Nora of Waterloo Columbus.  Ahlers than advanced to the second round of the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jeff Yanda of South Tama County.  Ahlers beat Tucker Henderson of Davis County 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 to advance to Saturday’s consolation semifinals.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton 9 Gehlen (2-1/2-1) 1

Sioux City North 9 Le Mars (2-2) 3

(LE MARS) — Sergeant Bluff-Luton took advantage of three errors and nine walks to stay unbeaten with a 9-1 win over Gehlen Friday at the Riverview Complex.  The loss was the first in three games for Gehlen.  A four-run third inning helped the Warriors to an early 6-0 advantage.  Phil Frye had two of the Jays’ five hits and drove in their lone run.

(LE MARS) — Damek Tomschau, a first-team all-state selection in 2009, belted his second home run of the season and drove in four runs to lead the defending 4A State champion Sioux City North Stars to a 9-3 clubbing of Le Mars Friday night at the Bulldog Complex.  Tomschau finished with three hits.  Tanner Dowling and Austin Homan had two hits and a RBI each for Le Mars.

 

SATURDAY RESULTS – May 29

(boys tennis)

Le Mars’ Mike Ahlers finished seventh at the 1A State Singles Tournament in Waterloo Saturday.   Ahlers lost 0-6, 2-6 to James McManus of Waterloo Columbus in the consolation bracket semifinals before beating John Rohlf of Davenport Assumption 6-7 (7-3), 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) in the seventh place match to go 3-and-2 for the two-day tournament.

KINGSLEY-PIERSON CLASSIC

Gehlen went 2-and-1, beating Kingsley-Pierson 9-4, losing 4-3 to Lawton-Bronson and then beating Westwood 12-4.

Akron-Westfield went 2-0 with a 3-1 win over state-rated Newell-Fonda and an 11-0 win over OA-BCIG.

Remsen St. Mary’s went 3-and-0 with a 13-7 win over Westwood, a 14-1 win over Kingsley-Pierson and a 12-2 win over Lawton-Bronson.

Kingsley-Pierson went 1-and-2 with a 7-6 win over Sioux City West and losses to Gehlen and Remsen St. Mary’s.
