(LeMars) — Local fire fighters have got to be wondering if there is an end to the number of field fires.
On Thursday, county fire departments responded to five different field fires, of which all of them required additional assistance from other fire departments. A field fire started southeast of Merrill near Jasmine Road and 280th Street that burned several acres of corn. That fire required the services of Merrill, Hinton, LeMars, and Kingsley. Fire officials were called to the scene twice as hot spots flared up again. Oyens, Akron, and LeMars fire officials were called to a fire located on Nickel Road near Seney. The LeMars fire department was also called to assist a fire in Sioux County when Maurice needed additional assistance. Earlier in the day, Remsen responded to a fire south of Highway 3 in Cherokee County to assist the Marcus fire department with a field fire.
(LeMars) — Plymouth County Engineer, Tom Rohe has announced the overlay construction project on highway C-38 is now completed. That project started in mid-July.

(LeMars) — The LeMars United Way campaign is only a month into its fund drive and already the charitable organization is nearing three-fourths of its annual goal. To date, the LeMars United Way has either received, or have pledges amounting to $184,000. The local United Way established a goal of $250,000 or a 6 percent increase from last year. Robin Grosenheider serves as the chair person for the LeMars United Way, she says several people and businesses have contributed giving them a strong start. She specifically credits Frontier Communications, Gehlen Catholic Schools, and Wells Enterprises. Wells increased their total contribution by almost $24,500 over last year’s donation. Despite the down economy, people in and around LeMars have been generous with their donations and pledges.

(LeMars) — Fashion savy young women will soon have a new place to shop for the trendiest looks at affordable prices. Maurices will reopen a new store at 1183 Holton Drive, next to Wal-Mart, in LeMars. The new women’s clothing store is scheduled to open on October 15th.
(LeMars) — Community citizens are asked to put on their walking shoes and join in on the “Start Somewhere Walk” scheduled for today (Friday) at noon. The walk will be just one kilometer, or nearly a half a mile. It’s all part of the inititative by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation. LeMars has several walks organized including one that will start at the YMCA, a downtown walk will begin from the Olson Cultural Arts Center, and each of the schools have a walk planned. Gehlen Catholic and Floyd Valley Hospital will combine their efforts for a walk. Remsen has two walks scheduled. The first, is located in the business district of Remsen and will start at the Remsen Lumber Company. The second walk, will take place at the city football and track field. Statewide, the goal is to have 250,000 people participate in the walk.
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (AP) – A Spirit Lake man has been found guilty of attempted murder in the 2010 assault of his roommate with a fire poker.
The verdict against James Naujock was returned Thursday morning. Naujock, who also used a knife in the attack, was also charged with interference with official acts and interference with an
emergency communication but those charges were later dropped.
Naujock faces up to 25 years in prison when he’s sentenced. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 3.
