(LE MARS) — Tenth-rated (3A) Le Mars wrapped up a perfect 14-and-0 Lakes Conference season Monday night with a doubleheader sweep of Estherville/Lincoln Central, 7-5 and 11-1 in six innings at the Bulldog Complex.  In game one, Andy Hefner’s two-run homer in the third inning erased a 4-3 deficit to put the Bulldogs ahead to stay.  Le Mars added two more runs in the fourth on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly by Kendall Candor for a 7-4 lead.  Colan Borchers got the win with 3 and 2/3 innings of relief and the fourth pitcher of the night, Parker Rolfes, got a six-out save, striking out five of the seven batters he faced to preserve the 7-5 win.  In game two, Levi TeBrink threw a two-hitter and freshman D-H Dayton Rand had five RBI’s on three hits, including two home runs.  He had been 1-for-12 in his limited playing time this season.  Rand’s first career homer tied the game at 1-all in the second .. he had a RBI single in the fourth to start a five-run inning for the Bulldogs … and he finished his night with a walk-off three run homer in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the ten-run rule.  Parker Rolfes and Kendall Candor added RBI doubles to a 12-hit Le Mars attack.  TeBrink improved to 3-and-1 despite walking six batters.  Bulldog pitchers walked 14 batters in the two games but allowed just six hits.  Le Mars improves to 24-and-5 heading into Friday’s home game with Harlan.  The varsity game begins at 1 pm Friday and will be followed by a J-V game at 3 pm.

Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn 6 Gehlen Catholic (11-14/9-10) 5

(MARCUS) — Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn pushed across a sixth inning run to snap a 5-all tie and the Eagles edged Gehlen Catholic 6-5 Monday night in a War Eagle Conference baseball match-up in Marcus.  M-M-C scored five runs in the second inning on two walks, a hit-batsman and two hits.  The Jays tied the game with a five-run sixth.  Zach Wurth and Dylan Kneip had two hits each for Gehlen while Blake Wiltgen drove in a pair of runs.  Wiltgen took the loss on the mound, scattered ten hits while striking out five.  Gehlen falls to 11-and-14 for the season and 9-and-10 in the W-E-C.

THURSDAY RESULTS – July 5

(high school softball)

(LE MARS) — Senior Amber Timmins tossed a three-hit shutout and drove in four runs with a double and single to lead Gehlen Catholic to a 10-0, six-inning softball victory over Kingsley-Pierson in the 1A Regional quarterfinals at the Riverview Complex Thursday night in Le Mars.  The Lady Jays broke up a scoreless tie with a five-run third inning.  After Lisa Gunter drew a bases-loaded walk, Timmins unloaded a two-run double to the fence in right-center.  Two batters later, Alison Schnepf drilled a two-run single to right.  Timmins two-run single in the fourth put Gehlen in front 7-0.  The game ended with a three-run sixth inning with Schnepf’s third RBI of the game halting the contest on the ten-run rule.  Keely Collins, Marina Keck and Megan Meister had the Kingsley-Pierson hits.  Kingsley-Pierson’s season ends at 10-and-23.  Gehlen improves to 22-and-10 and will play number-nine Remsen St. Mary’s in Remsen Friday night in the semifinals at 7 pm.  The game will be carried on KLEM.

West Sioux 8 Gehlen Catholic (11-15/9-11) 7, eight innings

(HAWARDEN) — West Sioux edged Gehlen Catholic 8-7 in eight innings Thursday night in War Eagle Conference baseball action to bring an end to the regular season for both teams.  Michael Whitehead and Eric Oetken split the pitching chores for the Jays, combining to allow seven hits.  Oetken took the loss in relief.  Zach Wurth had a double and homer for Gehlen and finished with two RBI’s.  Dylan Kneip also had two hits for the Jays.  Gehlen Catholic finishes the regular season at 11-and-15 and 9-and-11 in the War Eagle Conference.  The Jays host a 1A District Tournament twinbill next Tuesday at the Riverview Complex with Akron-Westfield meeting Kingsley-Pierson at 5 pm and Gehlen meets Hinton at 7.

FRIDAY RESULTS – July 6

(REMSEN) — Gehlen Catholic spotted number-nine Remsen St. Mary’s a 4-0 lead before rallying to upset the Hawks 5-4 in a 1A Regional softball game in Remsen Friday night.  The Lady Jays victory sends them to their first Regional final on Monday against top-rated, defending State champion Akron-Westfield at 7 pm at the Le Mars softball field.  R-S-M took a 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk to Paige Harpenau in the third and then added three more runs in the fourth on a passed ball and RBI’s by Amanda Nielsen and Mackenzie Ricke.  Alison Schnepf’s sacrifice fly got Gehlen on the board in the bottom of the fourth and then the Lady Jays parlayed three hits, a walk and three errors to score four unearned runs in the fifth for a 5-4 lead.  Steph Rohe’s two-run single was the key hit in the inning, cutting the Hawks lead to 4-3.  Rohe ended up on third on the hit when R-S-M had a throwing error to home plate.  Rohe scored the tying run on a squeeze bunt by Brittany Krienert.  Krienert scored the go-ahead run on another throwing error.  Amber Timmins improved her pitching record to 19-and-9 for the season, scattering seven hits, walking four and striking out four.  Miranda Staab took the loss to fall to 23-and-8.  Gehlen takes a 23-and-10 record into the Regional championship game Monday while Remsen St. Mary’s ends the season at 26-and-9.

(LE MARS) — Chris Eckstaine fired a two hitter with six strike outs and helped his cause with a RBI double to lead the tenth-rated (3A) Le Mars Bulldogs to a 5-1 victory over Harlan in a regular season baseball match-up at the Bulldog Complex Friday afternoon.  The game was played in near 100-degree heat.  Kendall Candor paced a six-hit Le Mars attack with three hits.  The Dogs improve to 25-and-5 for the season and play at Sergeant Bluff-Luton Saturday night in a jv-varsity doubleheader.

SATURDAY RESULTS – July 7

(LE MARS) — Le Mars exploded for ten runs in their final two at-bats to break-up a 1-1 pitcher’s duel and the Lady Bulldogs eliminated Spencer 11-1 in six innings Saturday night in the 4A Regional semifinals at the Bulldog Complex.  Emily Pick hit the first pitch of the fifth inning over the left-center field fence for her third home run of the season to put Le Mars in front 2-1.  Spencer then proceeded to commit four errors to turn the inning into a five-run frame and a 6-1 lead.  Five hits and the Lady Tigers’ sixth error of the game plated five more runs in the sixth to stop the game on the ten-run rule.  Madison Heidebrink clubbed her seventh home run of the summer, a three-run shot to left to end the game.  Molly Renken threw a two-hitter for Le Mars with one walk and five strike outs.  Taylor Anderson had checked Le Mars to one hit through the first four innings before the wheels came off defensively for Spencer in the fifth.  Anderson finished with a seven-hitter for the Tigers.  Le Mars takes a 28-and-9 record into the Regional finals Tuesday night against number-nine Bishop Heelan at Sioux City West.  It’s their first Regional final since 2006.  The Lady Bulldogs are looking for their first-ever trip to the State Tournament in softball.

(SERGEANT BLUFF) — Kendal Hazel became Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s all-time career leader in pitching wins with his 26th as he fired a four-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 2-0 victory over number-seven (3A) Le Mars Saturday night in Sergeant Bluff.  Colan Borchers also threw a four-hitter for Le Mars with no walks and seven strike outs.  But Austin Krohn produced a pair of RBI-singles among the four Warrior hits to produce the game’s only runs.  Hunter Rowe had two of the Bulldogs’ four hits.  Le Mars falls to 25-and-6 for the season heading into their regular season finale Monday night at Sioux City West.
