(MAPLETON) — Senior Katelin Langel turned in an inspiring 29-point performance Monday night but it wasn’t enough as number-four Ar-We-Va ended number-12 Gehlen Catholic’s girls basketball season 58-45 in the 1A Regional finals in Mapleton. Langel scored 22 points after halftime to help the Lady Jays trim an 18-point halftime deficit to six midway through the third quarter. The rally ran out steam though and the Rockets punched their State tournament ticket for a third straight season with a 13-point victory. Ar-We-Va put Gehlen Catholic in a hole early, outscoring the Lady Jays 10-1 in the first three minutes and led 15-3 after one quarter of play. The Rockets built a 19-point lead late in the first half and took 32-14 lead to the locker room at the break. Langel opened the second half for Gehlen by turning three quick steals into layups and a three-pointer by Emily Holtgrewe capped a 9-0 run that drew the Lay Jays to with in nine at 32-23. A 14-2 surge narrowed the deficit to six at 34-28 with 4:42 to play in the third quarter. Ar-We-Va re-energized at that point and a 9-3 run to the end of the quarter built their advantage back up to 12 heading into the final eight minutes. The Rockets never allowed Gehlen to get closer than ten after that. Ar-We-Va countered Langel’s carrer night with a combined 35 points from seniors Paige Danner and Amy Hinners. Danner had 18 points and Hinner finished with 17. Langel had 13 of Gehlen’s 19 field goals for the night. The Lady Jays close out the 2012-2013 campaign at 16-and-6.

(LE MARS) — The Le Mars Bulldogs passed their first tournament test, beating Sergeant Bluff-Luton 82-73 Monday night to open Class 3A District tournament play at the Bulldogs new gym. Sophomore Tyler Borchers had a career-best 23-point performance to lead the Bulldogs. Junior Jake Irwin had 19, and three seniors also scored in double figures with Brenden Collins adding 14, Kyle Dolph 13 and Gabe Rahn 11. Collins hit two critical three-pointers in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs hit ten straight free throw shots to help hold off the Warriors. The Dogs didn’t need four overtimes to beat S-B-L as they did back in January as Le Mars advances to the district-one championship game against old nemesis, Bishop Heelan, Thursday night at the Sioux City North gym. Le Mars is 16-and-6 while Bishop Heelan is 15-and-7. The Crusaders beat Le Mars 57-42 back in December at ‘The Pit’.

(LE MARS) — It will be Gehlen Catholic and defending 1A State champion Boyden-Hull in the District finals Thursday night! Both teams advanced on the tournament trail Tuesday night with victories. Number-four Boyden-Hull improved to 20-and-3 with a 64-46 win over Remsen-Union while Gehlen led wire-to-wire against Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn and beat the Eagles 73-64 at the Reardon Family gym in Le Mars. The Jays came within one point of having all five starters score in double figures. Michael Whitehead had 20, Colton Kneip 15, Blake Wiltgen 12, Alex Kellen 10 and Solomon Freking 9. Gehlen stormed to an 18-point halftime lead and increased their advantage to 23 with three minutes left in the third quarter. M-M-C closed the third quarter on an 13-3 run to narrow the gap to 13 by the end of the quarter and closed to within seven with 6:40 to play before Gehlen re-charged their offensive engine and stretching the lead back to 15 two minutes later. Dylan Specht led Marcus/M-C with 23 points, including 17 during the Eagles’ second half rally. Gehlen Catholic improves to 18-and-4 for the season while M-M-C closes out a 14-and-9 campaign. The District final between Gehlen and Boyden-Hull will be played Thursday night in Sioux Center starting at 7 o’clock. The game will be carried on KLEM radio beginning at 6:50 with the pregame show.

(SIOUX CENTER) — Number-four Boyden-Hull used a swarming, dominate defensive effort to bring an end to Gehlen Catholic’s tournament trail, beating the Jays 54-31 Thursday night in the Class 1A District two title game at Sioux Center. The 31 points was by far the fewest points Gehlen has scored this season as the Jays shot just 22% for the night. The Jays fell behind by ten points right away and played uphill for the rest of the night. The Comets led by eight at halftime and opened the second half with a three-pointer by Colin Bolkema to go up by eleven and the lead was never under ten for the rest of the night. Boyden-Hull led by 19 after three quarters and built the advantage to 24 in the fourth period. Bolkema led all scorers with 23 with C.J. Koerselman adding another ten. Michael Whitehead had to carry the scoring load for Gehlen, scoring 17 of his teams 31 points. Solomon Freking had seven but the other three starters scored seven points between them. Normally they contribute about 33 points a night on average. Gehlen Catholic ends the season at 18-and-5. Boyden-Hull, the defending 1A State champions, plays Rock Valley in Le Mars Saturday night in the Sub-State finals.

FRIDAY RESULTS – February 22

(SERGEANT BLUFF) — All-state guard Shane Graves capped a 22-point night by hitting a pair of free throws with 1.6 seconds to play to secure Bishop Heelan’s 58-53 victory over Le Mars Friday night in the 3A district one final at Sergeant Bluff. The Bulldogs missed an opportunity to hit a potential game-tying three with 2.4 second left when Tyler Borchers batted a rebound out toward a wide-open Jake Irwin above the free throw circle but the two missed connections and the ball traveled into the back court for an over-and-back turnover. Irwin finished with 21 points for Le Mars, dropping in five three’s for the night. Kyle Dolph added 17 for the Bulldogs while Kyle Heaton complimented Graves’ 22 with 15 for the Crusaders. The game was close all night. Both teams enjoyed seven point leads. Le Mars led by six after the first quarter but trailed by one at halftime. The two teams were tied at 42-all going into the fourth quarter. It was Bishop Heelan’s eighth straight victory over Le Mars in the last seven years and the fifth time in that same span that Heelan has ended the Bulldogs’ season with a tournament victory. Le Mars closes out a 16-and-7 season while Bishop Heelan plays number-nine M-O-C/Floyd Valley in the Sub-State Monday in Le Mars.
