(LE MARS) — The Gehlen Catholic Jays divided a non-conference basketball twinbill with Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto Monday night at the Steve Shea Memorial gymnasium. The M-V-A-O girls sent the Lady Jays to their third straight loss, 49-40, with sophomore Emalee Fundermann leading the way with 19 points and Kayla Morgan adding another 17 to off-set Carli Murphy’s career-best 13 point performance for Gehlen. The Lady Jays fall to 10-and-5 for the season while the Rams improve to 15-and-2.
The Gehlen boys had their closest game of the season but when the night ended the Jays had notched their 16th win against no losses, 64-50, over Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto. The Jays shot 60% in the first half while sprinting to a 34-22 lead at the break. After the Rams pulled to within seven early in the second half, Gehlen closed the third quarter on a 14-2 run and led by 18 going into the final quarter. Alex Kellen led the Jays with 18 points, Solomon Freking and Blake Wiltgen netted 12 each and Ryan Stoll dropped in 11. Korey Kuhlmann had 18 for the Rams. M-V-A-O falls to 12-and-3 with the loss.
Gehlen has the night off on Tuesday and return to action Friday with a home date against Remsen-Union.

(CHEROKEE) — The Le Mars boys suffered their first loss of the bowling season, dropping a 2628-2469 decision to Cherokee Monday night in Cherokee. Matt Hystad rolled a 361 series for the Bulldogs and a top game score of 213. The Le Mars girls remained unbeaten with a 2217-2039 win over Cherokee. Katie Pope had a high series of 337 and a high game of 203. There was no jv girls match and the Le Mars jv boys bowled a 2301 and beat an incomplete squad from Cherokee. James Murra had the high game with a 190 and Austin DeBrall had the top series score of 330.

(LE MARS) — In what may go down as one of the best all-time shooting displays in Bulldog history, the Le Mars boys shot 76% in the second half and hit all ten of their field goal attempts in the fourth quarter to crush the Spencer Tigers 70-37 Tuesday night at the Bulldogs’ new gym. The Bulldogs went 16-of-21 from the floor in the second half. For two-and-a-half quarters the game was tight. Le Mars led 40-30 with 3:53 to play in the third quarter and then went on one of their best scoring tears ever, out-scoring Spencer 30-7 over the final quarter-and-a half to win by 33 points. It was the Bulldogs’ eleventh straight win over Spencer. Tyler Borchers led Le Mars with 20 points, Jake Irwin had 15 and Tyler Paulson 10. Matt Finnern had nine for Spencer. The victory improves the Bulldogs’ record to 10-and-4 for the season and 8-and-2 in Lakes Conference play. The Tigers fall to 9-and-6 for the season and 6-and-4 in conference play.
The Spencer girls handed Le Mars their fifth loss in arow, 54-42 Tuesday night, dropping the Lady Bulldogs to 3-and-12 for the season and 3-and-7 in Lakes Conference play. Holly Schneider had 18 for Le Mars and Kassidy Rieken added 17. Spencer countered with 13 from Kelli Kramer, 11 for Kirstin Martindale and 10 for Kelsey Rolfes. Spencer improves to 9-and-8 for the season and 7-and-3 in the Lakes. The two meet again next month (Feb. 19th) in the Regional quarterfinals at Spencer.
Le Mars travels to Cherokee Friday night.

Le Mars finished 7th at the Lakes Conference Tournament at Spencer Friday night. The Bulldogs crowned two champions — Donny Allaway at 106# and Nic Madsen at 126#. Alex Hermes took third at 285#, Matthew Simoni (113#) and Mason Weiler )138#) finished fifth, and sixth place finishers included Quenton Boddie (132#), Cody Beck (145#), Alex Orban (170#), Andrew Carpenter (182#) and Jorge Pera-Ahumada (220#).

(LE MARS) — There was just a hint of a tournament atmosphere in the air Friday night at the Steve Shea memorial gym as Gehlen Catholic welcomed Remsen-Union to town for a War Eagle Conference basketball doubleheader. In the opener, the 13th-rated Gehlen Catholic girls returned to the win column after three straight losses with a 75-43 win. The Lady Jays featured a balanced scoring attack, placing four in double figures. Hannah Sitzmann and Morgan Whitehead led the way with 14 each while Caitlin and Carli Murphy had ten each. Megan Maas led R-U with 16 with Rachel West adding 14. The Rockets fall to 2-and-15 with a 1-and-8 conference mark. Senior Hannah Sitzmann was given the game ball at the end of the game as it was announced she had now scored 906 career points between Storm Lake St. Mary’s and Gehlen Catholic and had surpassed Gehlen’s all-time career scoring leader, Emily Pitts.
The top-rated Gehlen Cathoilic boys finally got the fourth quarter push they had been missing for much of the first sixteen games, improving to 17-and-0 for the season with a 77-71 win over Remsen-Union Friday night. The Jays, who been winning by an average margin of 25 points a game, found themselves in a two point game with 45 seconds to play. Nick Schroeder’s lone bucket of the night drew the Rockets to within 73-71 with less than a minute to go after trailing by as many as eleven midway through the fourth quarter. Alex Kellen hit a pair of free throws for Gehlen to extend their lead to 75-71 and Colton Kneip capped a career night with a tip-in with 13 seconds to play to seal the six point victory. Kneip finished with 30 points, hitting all eleven of his shots from the floor and all eight free throw attempts. He also pulled down eleven rebounds. Jarod Steffes came off the Gehlen bench to score 13 points, hitting five straight during a 10-3 fourth quarter run to establish an eleven-point lead with 4:23 to play. Alex Kellen finished with ten for the Jays. Senior Tanner Hilbrands led all scorers with 33 for the Rockets with Austen Stock adding 13 and Trenton Hilbrands ten. Gehlen improves to 8-and-0 in the War Eagle Conference while R-U falls to 11-and-5 for the season and 7-and-2 in conference play. The two could potentially meet again in the 1A District finals at the Sioux City North gym February 27th.
Gehlen Catholic is off now until next Friday when they travel to Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn.
(CHEROKEE) — The Le Mars girls snapped a five-game losing streak with a 65-57 win over Cherokee Friday night in Lakes Conference basketball action at Cherokee. It was the second victory over the Braves this season as the Lady Bulldogs improve to 4-and-12 and 4-and-7 in league play. Holly Schneider led four in double figures with 18 with Kassidy Rieken adding 16, C.C. Galles 13 and Kasey Hovden 10. The Lady Bulldogs checked conference scoring leader, freshman Karly Hummel, to 15 points.
The Le Mars boys had little trouble with cellar-dweller Cherokee, winning 82-44, to improve to 11-and-4 for the season and 9-and-2 in the Lakes Conference. Tyler Borchers led the Dogs with 23 points while Jake Irwin and Colan Borchers dropped in 18 each. Jose Freed had 19 for Cherokee. Le Mars led 42-19 by halftime before completing a sweep of their season series with the Braves.
Le Mars returns home Tuesday night to meet Estherville/Lincoln Central.
