(Le Mars) — With Memorial Day fresh in our minds, it’s very fitting that the Le Mars Community Theater debuts it’s next performance “A Few Good Men” this Friday at the Postal Playhouse. “A Few Good Men” tells the story of a military court case in which the defense represents 2 young Marines who played a role in the loss of the life of another Marine while serving in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Obviously, a show of this caliber does take some strong male actors, which the theater has found in Richard Buman, who takes on the rookie lawyer role of Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee; and Dan Casey as Colonel Jessup, who famously accuses Kaffee of not being able to “handle the truth.” They, along with a number of other fine gentleman from the Siouxland are make up the cast of 14.
But what about the women of “A Few Good Men?”
Melanie Sailer has taken on the role of Lieutenant Commander JoAnne Galloway, a lawyer who has been sitting behind the desk, but is itching to get in the courtroom. Melanie’s first show with the Le Mars Community theater was a “Bad Year for Tomatoes” and more recently she portrayed Nurse Ratched in “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.” Melanie says in “A Few Good Men” finding the true identity of her character, as the only female written into the play, has been an interesting challenge.

Kerri Stinton is coming back from a 12 year theater hiatus to play a role that was written for man in Le Mars Community Theater’s “A Few Good Men.” In the script as Captain Julius Alexander Randolph, they simply changed the judges name to Julia Alexandra, and voila! Another part for a female. Stinton says that even though the name change was easy, working the female dynamic into a man’s character has given the courtroom scenes in the show a different feel.

Even though Kerri has been on stage before, she said the nerves still get her and she has to take lots of deep breaths and really “wear” her role, so to speak.

The show is also under the direction of A Few Great Women: Danna Schuster and Audrey Scholten.
“A Few Good Men” opens this Friday, May 30th, at the Postal Playhouse in Le Mars and runs this weekend through Sunday, and then again next Thursday-Sunday. Evening shows are at 7:30 with Sunday matinees at 2pm. For reservations call 546-5788.
