(SERGEANT BLUFF) — Ashtin Hazel’s two-run triple in the sixth inning broke up a 1-0 pitcher’s duel between S-B-L’s Abby Kolar and Gehlen’s Emily Meyer and No. 9 (3A) Sergeant Bluff-Luton shutout Gehlen Catholic 3-0 at Sergeant Bluff Monday night in summer softball action between two former War Eagle Conference rivals. Kolar finished with a four-hitter with one walk and three strikeouts. Meyer gave up just six hits with two walks and one strikeout. Kennedy Colvert drove in the first Warrior run with a third inning double. Jill Kessenich had two hits for Gehlen Catholic. The Lady Jays fall to 12-and-13 with the loss.
(EMMETSBURG) — Emmetsburg took advantage of four Le Mars errors and a wild pitch to score four unearned runs enroute to a 6-3 upset win over the league-leading Lady Bulldogs Monday night in a Lakes Conference encounter at Emmetsburg. The Lady E-Hawks built a 4-0 lead before Le Mars tried to rally late. Janessa Milbrodt’s two-run triple cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth. Two errors in the sixth, however, led to two more Emmetsburg runs and a 6-2 lead going into the seventh. Madison Heidebrink singled home one run in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 6-3 and Le Mars had runners on second and third and one of their top sluggers at the plate in Kassidy Rieken. E-Hawk pitcher Ashton Connelly escaped the threat by getting Rieken to foul out to third to end the game. Rieken and Heidebrink had two hits each to pace the Le Mars offense. Janessa Milbrodt, who no-hit Emmetsburg June 10th in an 8-0 win in Le Mars, took the loss. She gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out six. Connelly finished with a six-hitter with nine strike outs. The Lakes Conference loss was the first in two summers for the defending league champs and drops Le Mars into a first place tie with Spirit Lake at 5-and-1. Le Mars takes a 14-and-8 record to Spirit Lake Wednesday for a varsity doubleheader.

(EMMETSBURG) — Emmetsburg used a three-run homer by Zach Anderson in the first inning to open up an early 6-0 lead and then held off Le Mars to win 8-6 in a Lakes Conference baseball match-up at Emmetsburg Monday. A late charge by the Bulldogs came up a little short. Colan Borchers drove in a pair of runs in the sixth with a bases-loaded single to narrow the deficit to 8-5. Another run scored on a ground out in the seventh and Le Mars had two runners on base with no outs when the E-Hawks pulled off a little defensive magic. They picked a runner off third base and then ended the game with a double play, catching a fly ball in left field and cutting down a Bulldog runner at the plate attempting to tag up and score. Le Mars was checked to just six hits with Dayton Rand and Keaton Candor collecting two hits each. Alex Bell made his varsity debut on the mound for the Bulldogs, working the first two innings and taking the loss. Caleb Cline pitched the final four innings for the Dogs. Le Mars falls to 6-and-8 for the season and 4-and-2 in the conference. Le Mars plays at Estherville/Lincoln Central Tuesday night in a make-up game.
(LAWTON) — No. 3 (1A) Gehlen Catholic rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 7-5 victory over Lawton-Bronson Monday night in a non-conference baseball match-up of two of the better 1A teams in northwest Iowa. The Jays trailed 5-4 going into their final at-bat when Ty Kurth tied the game with a RBI double and Jarod Steffes put the Jays in front with a sacrifice fly. Blake Wiltgen scored on a passed ball for some added insurance. Jarod Steffes then set the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win in relief of starter Brady Heying. Gehlen has now won ten in a row and improved their record to 15-and-1 heading into a Wednesday War Eagle Conference game at West Sioux.

(LE MARS) — Gehlen Catholic rallied for four runs in their final two at-bats to erase a 3-0 deficit and stun No. 10 (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s 4-3 in War Eagle Conference softball at the Riverview Complex Tuesday night. Alexis Bunkers put the Hawks in front 3-0 with a RBI double in the first and a two-run homer in the third. Gehlen pulled within 3-2 in the fifth inning with a RBI single by Emily Pratt and another run scored on a error. The Lady Jays took the lead with two more runs in the sixth on a RBI double by Melissa Schmit and another throwing error allowed the go ahead run to score. Although Gehlen committed five errors they also made two game-changing defensive plays. They escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second inning thanks to a 1-2-3 inning-ending double play. Then in the top of the sixth the Lady Jays gunned down a runner at the plate to end the inning. Meghen Heying earned the pitching win despite giving up ten hits. She had no walks and three strikeouts. Morgan Cronin threw a five-hitter for the Hawks but walked three, hit a batter and struck out two. Gehlen Catholic improves to 13-and-13 for the season and 8-and-6 in the War Eagle Conference. Remsen St. Mary’s drops to 15-and-7 and 11-and-2 in league play. The two have a re-match Saturday in a make-up game at Remsen.

(ESTHERVILLE) — Matt Ellefson completed a comeback from a 5-2 deficit with a tie-breaking, RBI double in the seventh inning to lift Le Mars to a 7-6 Lakes Conference baseball victory at Estherville/Lincoln Central Tuesday night. Le Mars tied the game in the sixth with a run. Colan Borchers came on in relief of Dayton Rand to record a save, getting the final out of the game on a strike out to halt a seventh inning threat by the Midgets. Payton Pick started for Le Mars and worked the first 1 2/3 with Dayton Rand working five innings of relief, allowing just two hits with three walks and five strike outs. Rand was credited with the win. Matt Ellefson led a ten-hit attack for the Bulldogs with three hits and two RBI’s and Keaton Candor had two hits and two RBI’s. Le Mars snaps a three-game losing streak with the win and improves to 7-and-8 for the season and 5-and-2 in league play.

(IRETON) — Sophomore Meghen Heying allowed five hits with one walk and one strike out in the pitching circle and led the offense with two hits and two RBI’s to lead Gehlen Catholic to an 8-2 War Eagle Conference softball win over West Sioux Wednesday night at Ireton. One of Heying’s RBI singles came in the fifth inning when Gehlen plated four runs to extend a 3-2 lead. Three errors, a pair of walks and hits by Heying, Jill Kessenich and Carly Bunkers all played a role in the ten batter fifth inning. The Lady Jays improve to 14-and-13 for the season and 9-and-6 in the W-E-C. The Lady Jays are 10-and-3 in their last 13 games.
(SPIRIT LAKE) — Le Mars lost a pair of one-run decisions at Spirit Lake Wednesday night in the Lakes Conference and have fallen from the league lead to two games in back of Spirit Lake all in a matter of three days. Spirit Lake claimed the opener 7-6. Christina Konz hit a three-run homer for Le Mars in the third and Janessa Milbrodt tagged a two-run double for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth. But a seventh inning rally was cut short. In game two, Spirit Lake won 5-4 in nine innings. Le Mars bunched all of their scoring into the third inning. Grace Milbrodt doubled home a pair of runs and Christina Konz delivered a two-run single two batters later. Janessa Milbrodt took the loss in both games. Her stat line in game one .. six hits, four walks and six strike outs. In game two .. nine hits, three walks and three strike outs. Le Mars falls to 14-and-10 for the season and 5-and-3 in the Lakes Conference.

(HAWARDEN) — Mitchell Flack turned in a one-hit pitching performance for No. 3 (1A) Gehlen Catholic Wednesday as the Jays won their eleventh straight game, 8-1 over West Sioux. Flack walked six and struck out 12. Solomon Freking worked the final inning gave up the lone run to the Falcons. Freking led the offense with three hits. Ryan Stoll had two hits, including a RBI double. Gehlen improves to 16-and-1 for the season and 10-and-0 in the War Eagle Conference.
(SPIRIT LAKE) — Le Mars moved back into sole possession of first place in the Lakes Conference with a doubleheader sweep at Spirit Lake Wednesday night. In the opening game, Race Strecker delivered a pinch-hit RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning for his first career hit and run-batted-in and Le Mars pulled out a 1-0 walk-off victory. Colan Borchers improved to 2-and-2 with a two-hit shutout with no walks and ten strike outs. He allowed just three base runners in the game and no one moved further than first base. Matt Ellefson led the offense with three hits and scored the winning run on Strecker’s hit. In game two, Le Mars won 6-0, starting fast with three runs in the first and two more in the second inning. Cameron Leff started the scoring with his first home run in a Bulldog uniform. Matt Ellefson added a two-run single in the first. The Dogs scored on Dayton Rand’s single and Colan Borchers sacrifice fly in the second. Leff added a RBI single in the sixth to complete the scoring. Le Mars stranded eleven base runners. Mitch Sitzman led an eight attack with three hits. Cameron Leff earned the pitching win on a two-hit shut out with eleven strike outs and four walks. He’s now 3-and-1 for the season. Le Mars improves to 9-and-8 for the season and 7-and-2 in the Lakes Conference.

Both Le Mars runs scored on passed balls. Le Mars bounced back with a Game Two win, 8-7 , over Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union. Kassidy Rieken got the win in the pitching circle, throwing a six-hitter with one walk and four strike outs. Andrea Urban had a pair of doubles to lead a six-hit Lady Bulldogs’ offensive attack with two RBI’s. Le Mars stands at 15-and-11 for the season.

(SIOUX CITY) — Sioux City North erupted for nine runs in the third inning and turned a 3-1 lead into a 16-3 rout of Le Mars in a non-conference baseball match-up in Sioux City that was shortened to five innings by the ten-run-rule. Gabe Hoogers had three hits and four RBI’s for the Stars and Robert Neustrom added three hits and three RBI’s. Both had a pair of doubles. Hoogers was the winning pitching, holding the Bulldogs to just four hits. Colan Borchers had two hits for Le Mars and one RBI. The Bulldogs committed five errors. Le Mars falls to 9-and-9 for the season.
(GRANVILLE) — Ty Kurth overcame a shaky start to fire a two-hitter with two walks and eight strike outs and Lucas Hunt drove in five runs as number-three Gehlen Catholic rallied past West Monona 8-1 in the first round of the Spalding Tournament in Granville Friday. Kurth limited the Spartans to just a run in the first despite giving up one hit, a walk and a hit-batsman. Hunt had a three-run double to key a six-run fourth inning to put Gehlen in front 6-1 and Hunt’s two-run single in the seventh completed the scoring. Hunt finished with three hits and Solomon Freking had two. The Jays improve to 17-and-1 for the season with their 12th straight win.

(REMSEN) — Alexis Bunkers fired a three-hit shutout to pitch No. 9 (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s to a 3-0 win over Gehlen Catholic Saturday in a make-up War Eagle Conference game in Remsen. The win avenged a 4-3 loss to the Lady Jays on Tuesday in Le Mars. Bunkers only problems came in the seventh when she issued the only two walks she allowed in the game. But she was able to shut down the rally with no damage done. Lyndsie Shorg broke up a scoreless tie with a RBI triple in the third inning. Jennifer Ahlers made it 2-0 with a fourth inning RBI double and Veda Pick chased home the final run with a pinch-hit double in the sixth. The Hawks improve to 16-and-7 for the season and 12-and-2 in the War Eagle Conference heading into a showdown with top-rated Akron-Westfield Monday. Gehlen falls to 14-and-14 for the season and 9-and-7 in league play.
(SPENCER) — Le Mars lost to both state-rated Sioux Center and to state-rated North Union Saturday at the Spencer Tournament and finished 1-and-3 for the weekend to fall to 15-and-13 for the season. No. 5 (3A) Sioux Center routed the Lady Bulldogs 16-2 in four innings, holding Le Mars to just two hits. Andrea Urban and Ellie Meade had both hits in the first inning for the Lady Bulldogs leading to their two runs. Le Mars unleashed an 11-hit attack in the second game of the day but fell 8-7 to No. 7 (2A) North Union. Christina Konz had three hits to lead the way with Madison Heidebrink adding two hits and four RBI’s for the Lady Dogs. Heidebrink had a two-run double during a four-run fifth inning and a two-run homer to key a three-run seventh inning rally that fell a run short.

Gehlen defeated Unity Christian 12-1 in the semifinals as Solomon Freking and Austin Herbst combined on a four-hitter and together struck out nine batters. Blake Wiltgen had three hits and scored three runs to pace a 13-hit attack for Gehlen. Noah Livermore had two hits and four RBI’s and Ty Kurth had two hits, including his first career home run, and three RBI’s. In the championship game, Gehlen beat Sioux Center 9-0 in a game shortened to six inning by weather. Blake Wiltgen checked the Warriors on two hits with three walks and ten strike outs. He also had two more hits and a RBI at the plate. Mitchell Flack jump-started the offense with a three-run double in the first inning. Jarod Steffes belted a home run and finished with two hits and Solomon Freking had two hits and two RBI’s for the Jays. Gehlen Ctaholic improves to 19-and-1 for the season.
(CARROLL) — Anthony Beyrink and Mason Millard combined to limit Le Mars to one hit as Carroll beat the Bulldogs 13-3 in five innings at the Carroll Tournament Saturday. Carroll took advantage of four Bulldog errors to score eight unearned runs. Five runs in the third inning broke the game open. Cameron Leff had the lone Bulldog hit. Le Mars did capitalize on nine walks by Tiger starter Anthony Beyrink and scored three runs in their final at-bat. The Bulldogs slip to 9-and-10 for the season.
