FRIDAY RESULTS – August 29

(high school football)

LE MARS  — M-O-C/Floyd Valley scored a safety midway through the fourth quarter and then returned the free kick 33 yards for a touchdown to extend a 16-13 lead to 23-13 and the Dutch went on to post a 23-21 victory over Le Mars in the opening Friday night of high school football for 2014.  Le Mars opened the scoring with Beau Ohm dashing 85-yards for a first quarter touchdown.  The Dutch tied the game on a two-yard run by Trevor Huss in the second quarter and the moved in front 14-7 when Brady Schutt scooped up a Bulldog fumble and ran ten yards for the go-ahead touchdown.  Beau Ohm pulled the Bulldogs to within 14-13 early in the fourth quarter with a one yard plunge.  Le Mars missed the extra point.  The Dutch went ahead 16-13 on a safety and then Toby Huffman returned the ‘free kick’ kickoff 33 yards for a touchdown.  Koster Buss ran ten yards for a Le Mars touchdown with 2:06 to play and Tyler Paulson threw a two-point conversion pass to Tyler Borchers to pull the Dogs to within two points. But the Dutch held on for the opening night victory.  Beau Ohm led a 227 yard rushing night for Le Mars with a career-best 196 yards on 26 carries.  Koster Buss, debuting at quarterback for Le Mars, was 13-of-28 passing for 120 yards.  Le Mars travels to Western Christian next Friday for a non-district game against the Wolfpack.  The game will be carried on KLEM.

SIBLEY  — Sibley-Ocheyedan converted a pair of second quarter interceptions into touchdowns and the Generals beat Gehlen Catholic 21-14 Friday night in the season opener for both schools.  Solomon Freking, getting his first start as Gehlen’s quarterback, capped a 76-yard drive on the Jays’ first possession with a 20-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.  Kramer Grimes picked off a Freking pass on the first play of the second quarter and returned it 35 yards to the Gehlen 22, setting up an eleven-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Sayler to Mitchell Vander Veen.  Ruben Ramirez kicked the extra point for a 7-6 Generals lead.  Colby Wagenaar intercepted a Freking pass late in the first half, setting up a short touchdown drive from the Gehlen eight yard line.  Sayler scored on a two-yard run with 1:57 left in the first half for a 14-6 lead at the break.  Sayler fired a 57-yard TD-pass to Trent Kruger midway through the third quarter to extend Sibley-Ocheyedan’s lead to 21-6.  Gehlen scored on Solomon Freking’s one-yard run with 33 seconds to play and Lucas Hunt ran the two-point conversion in to cut the deficit to seven points.  But the Generals recovered the onside kick and ran the clock out for an opening night victory.  Lucas Hunt ran for 88 yards on 19 carries for Gehlen and Solomon Freking added 72 yards on 13 carries.  Freking hit on 10-of 23 passes for 157 yards.  Robbie Gunter caught five passes for 107 yards including two catches on the final TD-drive of 30 and 34 yards.  D.J. Loutch had three pass catches for 27 yards.  The Jays host Hinton next Friday in their home opener.
