SIOUX CITY — The Le Mars guys and gals returned to basketball action Saturday night following a two week holiday break at the ‘The Pit’ in Sioux City.

The Le Mars girls lost a heart-breaker to unbeaten, state-rated Bishop Heelan, 56-53.  The Lady Bulldogs led by two at the half and trailed by one entering the final quarter.  They stayed within two or three points throughout the final eight minutes before losing by three to fall to 3-and-6 for the season.  Kassidy Rieken had 17 for Le Mars with Katrina Engebretson knocking down a career-best 13 and Janessa Milbrodt adding 11.  Megan Todd led No. 5 (4A) Bishop Heelan with 18.

The Le Mars boys routed Bishop Heelan 60-33 in the second half of the doubleheader.  It was only the second win all-time at the ‘The Pit’ for Le Mars and their first since a Steve Staver-led Le Mars team won by 11 back in 1981.  Tyler Paulson sparked the Bulldog victory with a career-high 25 points, connecting on 4 of the team’s seven three-pointers.  Tyler Borchers added 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists.  ‘T’ hit a 92-foot shot at the buzzer to end the first quarter for his third three of the season.  Trent Hilbrands also had 14 for the Dogs, who improve to 6-and-1 with the win.  Le Mars led by 16 at halftime and held the Crusaders to 12 second half points.  Bishop Heelan falls to 4-and-5 for the season.
