AKRON — The Akron-Westfield girls ran off 16 unanswered points during a six minute stretch of the fourth quarter to break away from a 44-all tie and the Westerners went on to post a 61-48 non-conference victory over the Gehlen Catholic girls Tuesday night in Akron. Ann Hedlund led the way for 3-and-6 Westerners with 28 points, connecting on seven three-pointers. Danika Tindall had 14 and Bailey Davis 12 for A-W. Carli Murphy had a career-best 15 for the Lady Jays and Morgan Whitehead dropped in another 12. Gehlen Catholic falls to 2-and-7 for the season.
The No. 2 (1A) Gehlen Catholic boys ran their record to 9-and-0 with a 73-42 romp over Akron-Westfield in their first game back following a two-week holiday break. The Westerners led 12-8 four minutes into the game before the Jays went on an 11-0 run to get the upper hand and just steadily pulled away after that, leading by as many as 38 points in the third quarter. The Jays scored 46 points in the middle two quarters. Alex Kellen led the way to victory for the Jays with 21 points with Jarod Steffes adding 15 and Ryan Stoll 14. Tavian Banks had nine for the Westerners, who fell to 3-and-5 with the loss.

IOWA CITY – Travis Trice scored 25 points and hit seven 3-pointers and Michigan State rallied to pound Iowa 75-61 on Thursday night, its ninth straight win over the Hawkeyes.
Branden Dawson had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Spartans (11-5, 2-1 Big Ten), who came back from an 11-point halftime deficit to post one of their biggest wins of the season.
Michigan State opened the second half on a 25-9 run and never looked back. The Trice-led Spartans were 8 of 9 from 3-point range in the final 20 minutes.
Gabe Olaseni tied a career high with 18 points for the Hawkeyes (11-5, 2-1), who were outscored 47-22 in the second half.

FRIDAY RESULTS – January 9

STORM LAKE — The Le Mars Bulldogs scored a complete sweep of the Storm Lake Tornadoes Friday night, winning both varsity games by 40 points and taking the two JV games in Lakes Conference play at Storm Lake. The JV girls won 44-18 behind Jessica Eisma’s 12 points and the Le Mars JV boys won their game 62-28 with Gabe Eckstaine collecting 11 and Jake Thompson 10 for the Bulldogs.
The Le Mars varsity girls ran off 16 straight points in the first half to break away from a 7-6 lead to a 23-6 advantage and never looked back in beating winless Storm Lake 56-16. The Lady Bulldogs led 35-10 at halftime and took a 45-14 lead into the final quarter. Kassidy Rieken had 14 points for Le Mars, Emily Ahlers added 10 and junior Katrina Engebretson had nine. The victory returns the Lady Bulldogs to the win column after two losses in a row and improves their season mark to 4-and-6 with a 3-and-2 Lakes Conference record. Storm Lake falls to 0-and-11 and have now lost 27-straight since a win in December of 2013. The Tornadoes are 1-and-96 since a visit to the State Tournament in 2010.
The Le Mars boys had little trouble in winning for the 17th straight time against Storm Lake, beating the Tornadoes 81-41 Friday. The Bulldogs led 39-22 at halftime and outscored Storm Lake 42-19 in the second half. Tyler Paulson had 23 points to pace a balanced Le Mars scoring attack. Trent Hilbrands had 17, Tyler Borchers 15 and Caleb Cline 13 for the Bulldogs. Le Mars has now won four straight since a December loss to Sergeant Bluff-Luton and improve to 7-and-1 for the season and 5-and-0 in the Lakes Conference.
The 5th-rated (3A) Le Mars boys play Sioux Center at two o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City as part of the C-N-O-C Classic schedule. The game will be carried on KLEM. Le Mars returns to Lakes Conference action on Tuesday with a make-up doubleheader against Estherville/Lincoln Central at the Bulldogs’ gym.
LE MARS — The number-two ranked (1A) Gehlen Catholic boys got a push Friday night from conference newcomer, Harris Lake Park, before improving their record to 10-and-0 with a 46-38 War Eagle Conference victory. The league-leading Jays are 5-and-0 in the W-E-C. Gehlen again featured a balanced scoring attack with Ryan Stoll dropping in 13 points, Alex Kellen 11 and Solomon Freking 10. The Jays started fast, jumping out to a 20-5 lead in the first quarter before the Wolves closed the gap over the final three quarters. Brady Van Iperen had 16 points for Harris-Lake Park, which fell to 3-and-5 for the season.
The Gehlen Catholic girls had their most impressive win of the season, taking down Harris-Lake Park 65-40 in a W-E-C match-up to run their record to 3-and-7 for the season and 2-and-3 in the War Eagle Conference. Taylor Peters had a 21-point performance for the Lady Jays, knocking down six three-pointers. Morgan Whitehead added 13 and Jolee Linden had 10. Allison Hansen chipped in with nine. Katherine Ihnen had 16 for Harris-Lake Park, who falls to 4-and-5 for the season.
The Gehlen girls travel to Sibley-Ocheyedan Monday for a JV/varsity doubleheader and the Jays return to War Eagle Conference play next Friday when they host Trinity Christian in a girl/boy double dip.

SIOUX CITY — No. 5 (3A) Le Mars ran their winning streak to five and improved to 8-and-1 for the season with a 63-53 win over Sioux Center Saturday afternoon at the C-N-O-S Classic at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. The Bulldogs spotted the Warriors an 8-0 lead four minutes into the game before Caleb Cline’s three-pointer broke the ice for Le Mars. Cline went on to hit three treys and finished with a career-best 19 points. Tyler Paulsen closed the first quarter with a three-pointer at the buzzer to close the Sioux Center lead to 14-13 and the Bulldogs took their first lead early in the second quarter on another three by Trent Hilbrands. Le Mars closed the first half with a tip-in at the buzzer by Tyler Borchers for a 30-23 advantage and the Bulldogs never trailed again. The Dogs opened a 16-point advantage midway through the fourth quarter. Borchers finished with 14 points before fouling out with 1:17 to play. Pete Meis added 12 for the Bulldogs. Alex Bakker led Sioux Center with 19 and Steve Kragt added ten. The Warriors slip to 6-and-5 for the season. Le Mars hosts Estherville/Lincoln Central Tuesday in a make-up Lakes Conference doubleheader.
