Cardale (kahr-DAL’) Jones fared very well in just his third collegiate start for the Buckeyes, completing 16 of 23 passes for 242 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah) threw for the Ducks’ only touchdowns, including a 70-yard strike to Byron Marshall.

SIBLEY — Gehlen Catholic rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 50-all, forcing overtime, only to fall 52-51 at Sibley-Ocheyedan Monday night in a non-conference girls basketball match-up. Morgan Whitehead led a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Jays with 14 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Peters and Carli Murphy added 11 points each and Allison Hansen had 10. Sarah Honken led the Generals with 14 points. The win was the first for Sibley-Ocheyedan, who improves to 1-and-11. Gehlen falls to 3-and-8 for the season and will host Trinity Christian Friday at the Leroy Kellen gym.

LE MARS — The Le Mars girls connected on 9-of-10 foul shots in the final 2:11 of the game to break away from a 35-all tie to beat Estherville/Lincoln Central 47-40 Tuesday night in a make-up Lakes Conference game at the Bulldogs gym. Kassidy Rieken’s two free throws with 2:11 to play put the Lady Bulldogs in front 37-35 and a three-point play by Holly Schneider extended the lead to 40-35 with 1:32 to go. Rieken added two more free throws with 1:08 left for a 42-38 advantage and Sidney Baumgartner and Emily Ahlers followed with two free throws apiece in the final 46 seconds for a 46-40 lead. Holly Schneider connecting on one-of-two foul shots in the closing seconds to wrap up the seven-point win. Kassidy Rieken paced a balanced Le Mars scoring attack with 17 points while Holly Schneider added 15. Le Mars improves to 5-and-6 for the season and 4-and-2 in the Lakes Conference. The Lady Bulldogs host defending 3A State Champion, M-O-C/Floyd Valley, Thursday night in a make-up jv/varsity doubleheader before travelling to Spirit Lake Friday night to play the fourth-ranked (3A) Indians in a Lakes Conference match-up.
The third-rated (3A) Le Mars boys extended their winning streak to six straight with a 70-50 Lakes Conference victory over E-L-C. Tyler Paulson led a balanced Bulldogs scoring attack with 21, with Tyler Borchers dropped in 20 and Trent Hilbrands added 16. Le Mars took charge midway through the first quarter, leading by 13 after one quarter, and by 20 at the halftime break. The Bulldogs take a 9-and-1 record and 6-and-0 conference mark to Spirit Lake Friday night for a key Lakes Conference match-up with the fourth-ranked (3A) Indians, who trail Le Mars by a game in the league standings.

WACO, Texas (AP) – Kenny Chery made a jumper with 4.7 seconds left and No. 22 Baylor pulled out a 74-73 win over Number 11 Iowa State after blowing a 14-point lead.
Rico Gathers had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Bears (13-3, 2-2 Big 12), who had led throughout until Georges Niang made a jumper with 1:54 left in the game for a 68-67 lead.
Lester Medford hit a 3-pointer from the right corner with just over a minute left, but Iowa State (12-3, 2-1) got even on Niang’s high bank shot.
Johnathan Motley had a go-ahead putback on a miss by Chery before the Cyclones went back ahead on a 3-pointer by Bryce Dejean-Jones.
Iowa State called timeout after Chery’s last basket, but Niang missed a runner as time expired.
Niang scored 10 points, nine over the final 8 1/2-minute stretch to erase Baylor’s 62-48 lead.

LE MARS — The Le Mars Lady Bulldogs will take a three-game winning streak to Spirit Lake Friday after beating defending State 3A champion M-O-C/Floyd Valley 56-47 Thursday night at the Bulldogs gym. The game was a make-up contest from last week’s postponement. Le Mars used free throw shooting to hold off an opponent’s late charge for the second time in three days. Freshman Sidney Baumgartner’s four free throws in the final 25 seconds helped seal the deal but it was Katrina Engebretson that drove the dagger into the heart of the Lady Dutch. Engebretson went to the free throw line for two shots with 69 seconds to play and her team leading 49-45. She hit the first free throw attempt but missed the second shot only to end up with the ball following a scramble for the rebound and she banked in a shot from the right side of the lane for a 52-45 lead. M-O-C/Floyd Valley never recovered. The game was close throughout with Le Mars taking the lead for good at the 2:43 mark of the first quarter on a three-pointer by freshman Jen Schneider. The Lady Bulldogs built a seven point lead by the end of the first period and led by eight the half. Le Mars took a 39-30 lead into the final quarter before the Lady Dutch drew to within three with 3:12 to go. Jen Schneider had a career-high 20 points, connecting on four three’s, to lead Le Mars in scoring. Kassidy Rieken added 12. Breana Schuiteman led the Lady Dutch with 15 and Destiny Einerwold added 11. M-O-C/Floyd Valley, rebuilding after a heavy graduation loss from a 26-and-1 season a year ago, have now lost nine straight to fall to 3-and-10. Le Mars improves to 6-and-6 for the season with their sixth win in the last eight games.

SPIRIT LAKE — No. 4 (3A) Spirit Lake forced the Lakes Conference boys basketball race into a three-way tie for the league lead with a 62-53 win over No. 3 (3A) Le Mars Friday night. Senior Alec Henrickson led the way to victory, connecting on 14-of-17 from the foul line to score a game high 26 points. Billy Brown added 14 and 6’9″ transfer Ryan Kriener had 12 before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. With the Indians’ defense bottling up the Bulldogs top two scorers, Tyler Borchers and Tyler Paulson, for much of the night, sophomore Trent Hilbrands picked up the slack with 17 points. Borchers was limited to 10 before fouling out with two minutes to play while Paulson was checked to 9. The game was close throughout the contest before Spirit Lake pulled away in the final three minutes. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Le Mars and drops the Bulldogs to 9-and-2 for the season and 6-and-1 in league play. Spirit Lake improves to 9-and-1 for the season and 5-and-1 in the Lakes Conference. Le Mars, Spirit Lake and Western Christian all share the league lead with one loss each.
The No. 4 (3A) Spirit Lake girls scored the final four points of the game to hold off a determined effort by a scrappy Le Mars team to win 59-51 Friday night. All-stater Emma Dau poured in 19 points for the Indians while Bailee Newman scored 16. Kassidy Rieken had 16 for Le Mars and Holly Schneider 14. The loss halts a three-game winning streak for Le Mars and drops them to 6-and-7 for the season and 4-and-3 in the Lakes Conference. Spirit Lake is 9-and-2 for the year and 5-and-1 in league play.
Le Mars hosts Emmetsburg Tuesday night before travelling to Hull to meet Western Christian next Friday.
LE MARS — Gehlen Catholic claimed a doubleheader sweep of War Eagle Conference rival Trinity Christian Friday night in Le Mars as the Gehlen boys stayed unbeaten at 11-and-0 while the Lady Jays improved to 4-and-8. Gehlen Catholic had three girls score in double figures Friday night, led by Carli Murphy’s 15, Morgan Whitehead had 14 and Taylor Peters 13. Nicole Gritters had 13 for the Tigers. Gehlen led 30-16 by halftime while improving to 3-and-3 in the W-E-C.
The Gehlen Catholic boys celebrated being elevated to the number one spot in this week’s A-P 1A poll with a convincing 59-32 win over Trinity Christian. Solomon Freking had 14 to pace the Jays scoring attack, Ryan Stoll added 13 and Alex Kellen had 11. Blake Meyer had 11 to lead the Tigers. The Jays took control early while cruising to their sixth win against no losses in War Eagle Conference play to maintain their league lead.
The Jays travel to Woodbury Central Monday and Hinton on Tuesday for non-conference games before returning to War Eagle Conference play Friday at Remsen St. Mary’s. The doubleheaders at Hinton on Tuesday and in Remsen on Friday will be carried on KLEM.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Aaron White scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half to lead Iowa to a 76-67 win over Ohio State on Saturday.
Adam Woodbury had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (13-5, 4-1 Big Ten), who swept the home-and-home series with Ohio State for the first time since 2004. Mike Gesell added 11 points the Hawkeyes.
D’Angelo Russell scored a game-high 27 points on four 3-pointers and grabbed eight rebounds for the Buckeyes (14-5, 3-3).
White scored 12 straight points during a key stretch in the middle of the second half to push Iowa’s lead to 16 points. The senior made 10 of 12 free throws for the game.
A Shannon Scott 3-pointer cut Iowa’s lead to 68-62 with 4:46 left, but Ohio State never got any closer.
Jae’Sean Tate scored 11 points and Marc Loving added 10 for Ohio State.
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Naz Long scored 20 points and 11th-ranked Iowa State held off Number 9 Kansas 86-81 on Saturday night, recording back-to-back wins over the Jayhawks for the first time in 14 years.
Georges Niang had 15 points for the Cyclones (13-3, 3-1 Big 12), who shot 9 of 20 on 3s in snapping Kansas’ five-game winning streak.
Long followed a long 3 with a layup to give Iowa State a 71-57 lead with 6:26 left. Kansas pulled to 82-79 with 29 seconds to go, but Niang sealed the win by drawing a crucial charge with 14 seconds left.
Frank Mason III scored 21 points and Perry Ellis had 19 with 11 rebounds for Kansas (14-3, 3-1), the last team in the Big 12 to lose a conference game.

Russell Wilson connected with Jermaine Kearse for a 35-yard touchdown at 3:19 of OT to cap an exciting finish in the NFC championship game. Marshawn Lynch ran for 157 yards and a touchdown for the Seahawks, who set an NFL conference championship game record by rallying from a 16-point halftime deficit.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – Tom Brady is going to the Super Bowl for the sixth time after throwing for 226 yards and three touchdowns in New England’s 45-7 pounding of Indianapolis in the AFC title game. LaGarrette Blount ran for three scores while amassing 148 yards on 30 carries to help the Pats reach the title game for the first time in three seasons. The Pats played shutout ball after Zurlon Tipton’s one-yard scoring run late in the first half.
