LE MARS — Sioux City East held off Le Mars to win 9-6 on opening night Monday night in softball action at the Bulldog Complex. The Lady Bulldogs were missing their two varsity pitchers, leaving the opening night assignment to Kailn Hardyk. Hardyk, who will pitch JV innings for the most part this summer, allowed six hits and walked five in her rare varsity start. Le Mars actually outhit East 11-6 but five errors defensively were just too much to overcome. Grace Milbrodt led the way offensively for Le Mars, collecting two hits and driving in four runs. Holly Schneider had three hits for Le Mars. Allison Lester and Rylie Zyzda drove in two runs each for East. Le Mars travels to Sioux City Tuesday to play Bishop Heelan.

LE MARS — Sioux City East spoiled the season opener for the Le Mars Bulldogs baseball team on Monday night, winning 18-2 in four innings. The game was shortened by the ‘Mercy Rule’. J.J. Stephens limited the Bulldogs to four hits while striking out eight. Dayton Rand started for Le Mars and worked the first two innings, giving up eight runs to take the loss. Rand was victimized by three errors so only two of the eight runs he surrendered were earned. Spencer Franco and Isaac Funk drove in three runs each for the Black Raiders. Race Streker had one of the four Bulldog hits and drove in a run. Gabe Eckstaine, Dayton Rand and Kyle Kliever had one hit each for the Dogs. Preston Vore, Keaton Candor and Race Streker all took a turn on the mound for Le Mars. East jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Le Mars scored twice in the bottom of the second. The Black Raiders tallied five times in the third and five more times in the fourth to end the game early. Le Mars travels to Sioux City North Tuesday night.

HOUSTON – James Harden scored a playoff career-high 45 points and the Houston Rockets forced a fifth game in the NBA’s Western Conference finals by beating Golden State 128-115 last night. Harden contributed 17 points in the fourth quarter, including seven during a 10-0 run after the Warriors got within six points with 8 1/2 minutes remaining. The Rockets shot 17-for-32 from 3-point range, with Harden hitting 7 of 11.

LE MARS — Taylor Peters’ three-run double capped a four-run 4th inning for Gehlen Catholic and the Lady Jays went on to win their season opener, 8-1 over Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union at the Riverview Complex Tuesday night. Peters’ two-out, bases-clearing hit off the center field fence followed a bases-loaded walk to Paris Schroeder. The Lady Jays took advantage of nine walks, a hit batsman and seven wild pitches to score four runs in the first two innings without the aid of a hit. The Jays were limited to just four hits by senior Alyssa Peters with Taylor Peters collecting a single and double. Meghen Heying scattered seven hits in the circle for Gehlen and lost her shutout bid in the seventh when the Lady Jays committed two errors to push across an unearned run. Heying finished with one walk and six strikeouts. Maddie Phillips and Mackenzie Schleis had three hits each for the Eagles. MMC/RU loaded the bases twice against Heying only to come up empty. Gehlen Catholic travels to Royal Wednesday night to play Clay Central-Everly.

SIOUX CITY — Dan Tillo and Robert Neustrom combined on a two-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts to pitch #3 (4A) Sioux City North to a 6-0 whitewashing of Le Mars in high school baseball action in Sioux City Tuesday night. Tillo struck out eleven in four innings and Neustrom struck out six in three innings of hitless relief. Keaton Candor and Race Streker had the only Bulldog hits. Neustrom, an Iowa Hawkeye recruit, belted a solo home run for the Stars. Trent Hillbrands and Ryley Magnussen split the pitching chores for the Bulldogs with Hillbrands working the first four innings, giving up four hits with two walks and two strike outs. Magnussen gave up one hit in his two inning stint with two walks. Le Mars hosts Sheldon Wednesday night at the Bulldog Complex.
LE MARS — Morgan Kellen tossed an opening night two-hit shutout for Gehlen Catholic and the Jays beat Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union 10-0 in a game shortened to six innings by the ten-run rule. Gehlen erupted for five runs in the first inning, keyed by back-to-back triples off the bats of Ty Kurth and Jarod Steffes. Steffes finished with three hits and Kurth had two hits and two RBI’s for the Jays. D.J. Loutsch brought an end to the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run single to right. The Jays travel to Everly Wednesday night to play Clay Central-Everly in a varsity only game at 5:30.

(LE MARS) — Jenn Schneider capped a four-run seventh inning rally with a walk-off single, scoring Chaise Benjamin with the winning run as Le Mars edged Sheldon 9-8 Wednesday night at the Bulldogs Complex. The victory evens the Lady Bulldogs mark at 1-and-1. Crystal Eppling started the comeback in the seventh with a RBI single and Grace Milbrodt followed with a two-run single to tie the game. Schneider’s game-winner came with two outs. Schneider had a three-run homer earlier in the game, giving her four RBI’s for the night. Kassidy Rieken returned to the pitching circle for Le Mars and scattered ten hits and struck out five to earn the complete game victory. Le Mars plays in the Bishop Heelan Tournament Friday and Saturday.

(EVERLY) — The Gehlen Catholic girls won wild slugfest in Everly over Clay Central-Everly, 19-8, Wednesday night.
Jill Kessenich and Taylor Peters belted home runs and Kessenich drove in four runs. Kessenich and Jaci Alesch had four hits each. Emily Meyers earned the pitching win with Meghen Heying closing out the victory in relief. The victory improves Gehlen Catholic’s record to 2-and-0. They’ll return to action Friday at Unity Christian in their War Eagle Conference opener and play at the Kingsley-Pierson Tournament Saturday.

(LE MARS) — The Le Mars Bulldogs finally got their offense going Wednesday night, scoring ten runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 6-all tie and beat Sheldon 16-6 on the ten-run rule. The Orabs had fought back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the score in the top of the sixth. Kyle Kliever drove in a career-best six runs on a double and single and Keaton Candor belted a home run. Preston Vore earned the win in relief. Vore followed Gabe Eckstaine and Race Steker to the mound. Le Mars travels to Sioux City Thursday night to play Bishop Heelan at Briar Cliff’s Bishop Mueller Field. The varsity game will be carried on KLEM starting at 6 p.m.

(ROYAL) — Gehlen Catholic improved to 2-and-0 in the young 2015 baseball season with an 18-0, four inning road win over Clay Central-Everly Wednesday night. Ty Kurth and Matt Holzman combined to one-hit the Mavericks with eight strikeouts. Kurth worked the first three innings and struck out seven while surrendering Clay Central-Everly’s lone hit and walking one. The Jays took advantage of six hit-batsman and seven walks to go along with eight hits. Noah Livermore had two hits and a RBI to lead Gehlen offensively with Solomon Freking and D.J. Loutsch picking up two RBI’s each. The Jays travel to Unity Christian Friday for the War Eagle Conference baseball opener. The game will be carried on KLEM, starting at 7:30.

(SIOUX CITY) — Bishop Heelan opened the 2015 season with a nine-run, 12-batter first inning against Le Mars and the Crusaders beat the Bulldogs 13-2 in a game shortened to five innings by the ten-run rule Thursday night at Bishop Mueller Field on the Briar Cliff campus. Drew Kasperbauer had two doubles and drove in three runs to key the first inning uprising. Le Mars committed four errors to fuel the Crusaders’ cause. Senior Ben Eastman checked the Bulldogs to three hits and retired the final eight batters he faced. Trent Hilbrands had a second inning infield single for Le Mars and Race Streker and Ryley Magnussen had doubles an inning later. Magnussen’s double brought home Streker with the first Bulldog run and Magnussen scored on Gabe Eckstaine’s ground out. Caleb Cline and Dayton Rand split the pitching chores, each working two innings. The two combined to give up eleven hits. Le Mars, now 1-and-3 for the season, returns to action Monday at Sioux City West.

DOUBLES: Le Mars’ Matt Ellefson & Dylan Harms won their first round match over a team from Dubuque Wahlert 6-2, 7-5, but then lost in the 2nd round to a Davenport Assumption team 0-6, 6-4, 3-6. They won their consolation bracket match over a team from Davenport Assumption 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 to advance to Saturday’s consolation semifinals where they’ll meet a team from Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Le Mars’ other double tandem, Thomas Havey & Kyle Marek, won their first round match over a team from Denison-Schleswig 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, but then lost to a Fort Dodge St. Edmonds team 0-6, 2-6. They were eliminated, losing in their first consolation bracket match to a team from Decorah 6-2, 1-6, 2-10.

(SIOUX CITY) — #3 (4A) Le Mars split their two games in the first day of the two-day Bishop Heelan Softball Classic at Riverside Park. In the first game Friday night, Sioux City North rallied to edge Le Mars 5-4 with a walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Kalin Hardyk took the loss, giving up eight hits, walking six and recording four strike outs. Christina Konz led the Lady Bulldogs’ offensively with two hits.
In the second game , Le Mars beat Charter Oak-Ute 7-6 with Grace Milbrodt providing a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Lady Bulldogs. Milbrodt finished with three RBI’s on a pair of hits. Kassidy Renken scattered ten hits, walked two and struck out two to earn the victory in the pitching circle for Le Mars. Le Mars takes a 2-and-2 record into Saturday’s games at 10 am against #3 (2A) Fort Dodge St. Edmond and at 12-noon against #1 (1A) Woodbury Central in the second day of the Classic.

(ORANGE CITY) — Ty Kurth’s three-run single capped a four-run second inning for Gehlen Catholic and Jarod Steffes threw a complete game five-hitter and the Jays stayed unbeaten at 3-and-0 with a 5-2 win over Unity Christian Friday night in Orange City. Kurth’s hit to right-center came on a 3-2 pitch with two outs and the runners on the move. D.J. Loutsch singled home the first run in the inning. Jarod Steffes added a two-out, RBI-double in the seventh to extend a 4-2 lead. Steffes gave up a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and finished with six strike outs. Alex Dorhout scattered seven hits for Unity Christian, but walked three and hit three batters. Dorhout finished with eight strikeouts. The Jays return to War Eagle Conference play Monday with a home date against West Sioux.

1A BOYS STATE SINGLES & DOUBLES TOURNAMENT AT WATERLOO
DOUBLES: Le Mars’ Matt Ellefson & Dylan Harms won their consolation bracket semifinal match Saturday morning 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 over a doubles team from Cedar Rapids Xavier. They finished in 6th place, losing 5-7, 6-3, 8-10 to a team from Marharishi from Fairfield.

BOYS STATE MEETS
(3A meet at Livermore – Webster City won the team title and Dane Waldron of Clear Lake won the individual title with a 150. Tate Arends of M-O-C/Floyd Valley finished 22nd with a 164).
(2A meet at Ames – Panorama won the team title with a 616 and Estherville/Lincoln Central finished 7th with a 680. Will Babcock of Panorama won the medal with a 142. Jaden Snyder of West Lyon finished 12th with a 158 and Dylan Whalen of West Lyon was 50th with a 178).
(1A at Marshalltown – Bishop Garrigan won the team title with a 604 with Alta-Aurelia finishing 4th with a 649. Kaleb Haage of Winfield-Mt. Union won the medal with a 145. Josh McCormick of Alta-Aurleia finished 5th with a 149 and Jack Glienke of Alta-Aurelia finished 13th with a 155.)

(SIOUX CITY) — Le Mars fell to 2-and-4 for the season after going 1-and-3 at the Heelan Classic Friday and Saturday. Saturday, #3 (4A) Le Mars lost 10-0 to #3 (2A) Fort Dodge St. Edmond as sisters Amanda and Emma Lansman combined to one-hit the Lady Bulldogs. Kalin Hardyk doubled for the lone Le Mars hit. Kassidy Rieken took the loss in the pitching circle, combining with Grace Milbrodt to surrender 19 hits.
In game two Saturday, #1 (1A) Woodbury Central limited a seventh rally by Le Mars to two runs and held off the Lady Bulldogs to win 6-3. Kassidy Rieken had three of the six Le Mars hits off winning pitcher Jade Peterson. She struck out eight. Sidney Baumgartner and Ellie Meade had RBI hits for Le Mars. Grace Milbrodt started the game in the pitching circle for Le Mars and gave up nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Kassidy Rieken worked the final 1 2/3. All six runs were charged to Milbrodt. Le Mars returns to action Monday at Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

(KINGSLEY) — Gehlen Catholic went 0-and-3 at the Kingsley-Pierson softball Classic Saturday. Westwood punched all five runs into the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and the Rebels handed the Lady Jays their first loss of the season, 5-3. Taylor Peters homered for Gehlen Catholic. #15 (1A) Newell-Fonda rallied from a 5-4 deficit deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 6-5 victory. Kate Christiansen limited Gehlen to five hits in the pitching circle and Mackenzie Mandernach drove in two runs for the Mustangs. Paris Schroeder had two hits, including a triple, and two RBI’s for the Lady Jays. Kingsley-Pierson scored a walk-off win the finale, edging Gehlen Catholic 6-5 in nine innings. Gehlen had tied the game in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Taylor Peters had three hits and Jolee Linden three RBI’s to lead the Lady Jays offensively against K-P pitcher Marina Keck. Keck finished with ten strikeouts for the Panthers. Ali Bailey led K-P offensively with three hits, including a double and triple. The Jays fall to 3-and-3 for the season and return to action Monday at home against West Sioux. The varsity game Monday will be carried on KLEM.
