Sheriff’s Office Investigates Fatal Accident Near Akron (Updated)

(Le Mars) — The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an accident reported on Sunday morning at about 7:41 a.m. regarding a vehicle in the ditch along Highway 12, a few miles north of the Woodbury/Plymouth County line.  A caller contacted the Plymouth County Communications Center stating there were two individuals injured from the accident , with one of which may be deceased. A preliminary investigation at the scene has been able to determine a 2003 Black Mitsubishi was northbound on Highway 12, when the driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to enter the west ditch.  The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest.  The driver was extricated from the vehicle by the Akron Fire Department and taken to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.  It is unknown at this time why the driver lost control of the vehicle.  It is suspected that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.  The Plymouth County Medical Examiner along with the State Medical Examiner’s Office are assisting with the investigation. 25-year old Samantha Derner of Sioux City sustained fatal injuries resulting from the accident on Sunday.  The other person in the vehicle, 25-year old Scott Allen Dennis, also of Sioux City, was in need of immediate medical assistance. He was transferred to Mercy Medical Center by the Akron Ambulance. Dennis’ injuries were non-life threatening. The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol are continuing their investigation in to the single vehicle crash.  Assisting at the scene were the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Deputies, Iowa State Patrol, Akron Fire Department, Akron Ambulance and Siouxland Paramedics.
