Gehlen Opens Busy Three Day Stretch with Win Over South O’Brien

257

Gehlen Catholic softball opened up a stretch in which they play four games in three days with a win over South O’Brien 5-2 last night. The Jays came out of the gate hungry for runs to score as they put up five runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The first six Jays to come to the plate reached base in the bottom of the inning with five of the six reaching on hits. Rylee Schnepf came up to bat with the bases loaded in the first inning and drove in two on an RBI single.

Following another RBI hit by Larissa Pohlen, Jayden Barthole stepped up to bat with two on and drove both of them with the fifth hit of the inning for Gehlen.

Moving to the top of the third, errors ended up costing Gehlen as two errors led to two runs scoring on an RBI base hit by South O’Brien’s Abby Schreck that made it 5-2. That was the end of the scoring for both teams as each pitcher settled down to finish the ballgame.

That includes Gehlen pitcher Rylee Schnepf who retired 14 of the last 15 Wolverines she faced in route to the win. Schnepf finished giving up three hits, two unearned runs, and striking out 12. The win was Schnepf’s 40th of her career which ties Amber Timmins for the Gehlen career pitching wins mark.

The win improves Gehlen’s record to 6-3 and 3-1 in War Eagle Conference play. The Jays are back at it tonight with a road conference game at Harris-Lake Park, and then are back home for two tomorrow against Sioux City North and Western Christian.
