Remsen St. Mary’s Baseball Rolls to Sixth Straight State Tournament

The eventful day for Remsen St. Mary’s continued into the evening with third-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s baseball punching their sixth ticket to state in a row with an 11-0 victory over Newell-Fonda in five innings.

Remsen St. Mary’s had no problem bringing in runs to score in the win over Newell-Fonda. They started by scoring a run in the first inning following a one-out triple from Levi Waldschmitt, Xavier Galles drove him in on a sacrifice fly. Then, the dam burst and Remsen St. Mary’s scored nine runs in the bottom of the second. The Newell-Fonda pitching staff walked six Hawks in the half inning and committed three errors leading to the big inning. The Hawks led 10-0 after two and tacked on one more run for good measure in the bottom of the third with Damen Brownmiller scoring on a wild pitch.

Remsen St. Mary’s Head Coach Dean Harpenau says that the key to his team’s success offensively came from putting the ball in play in bunting scenarios.

Blaine Harpenau pitched another gem allowing one hit, no runs, and striking out nine in the win over Newell-Fonda. Blaine now moves to 17th all-time on the Iowa high school baseball career strikeouts list. Coach Harpenau says that Blaine was very accurate with his pitches all night.

Remsen St. Mary’s is the highest ranked team of the eight that punched their ticket to Carroll last night. Coach Harpenau knows that this could lead to the Hawks getting the #1 seed at state. Despite the target that would place on his team, Coach Harpenau says that he would prefer to draw that top seed at state.

The Hawks will play Monday in the quarterfinals in Carroll. Coach Harpenau says that these next few days will include a lot of scouting so that his team is prepared to take the field in Carroll.

This is Remsen St. Mary’s sixth trip to state in a row and their 18th overall appearance. The Hawks will enter the tournament with a 26-3 record. Newell-Fonda’s season ends with a 21-7 record.

Remsen St. Mary’s has earned the #1 overall seed in the 1A tournament and will play eight-seed Grundy Center at 11:00 AM on Monday morning in Carroll. Listen to KLEM on Monday morning to hear all the action from the state baseball tournament.
