Le Mars Volleyball Drops Five-Set Battle in MRAC Opener

The Le Mars volleyball team suffered a tough five-set loss to Sergeant Bluff-Luton in their conference opener at home on Thursday night.

Le Mars started off strong getting up 13-2 in the first set and riding that momentum to win two of the first three sets. Three Bulldogs ended up finishing in double figures for kills, and head coach Jess Wolles says they were getting good passes from a strong defensive setup.

Aubree Leusink had a strong performance with 35 assists setting up Bulldog hitters. She is filling in the setter role for Payton Wright who graduated last year. Coach Wolles says she has been working hard to fill that spot well.

Le Mars was sitting in a good spot until midway through the fourth set. Things turned around from there as SB-L finished the fourth set scoring 12 of the last 15 points and winning the fifth set 15-5. Coach Wolles says the girls were not playing loose late in the match.

The Bulldogs get a week off from matches before they host Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson on Thursday to continue MRAC play. Coach Wolles wants the Bulldogs to be better conditioned to play a full five-set match when they take the floor next week.

Le Mars drops to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the MRAC with the loss. Sergeant Bluff-Luton improves to 7-4 overall and starts their MRAC schedule with a 1-0 record. You can listen to next week’s match with Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson on KLEM Radio.
