Akron-Westfield Baseball’s historic season ends in the state semifinal round

The Akron-Westfield baseball team had their season end at the hands of Lynnville-Sully in the state semifinal late on Wednesday night by a score of 4-0.

The loss ends the career of a group of Westerner seniors that went 5-10 as eighth graders. Head coach Gordon Johnson says spending all this time with this class has been rewarding.

The Westerners had no answer for Lynnville-Sully pitcher Carson Maston. He allowed just five Westerner hits on his way to a complete game shutout. Coach Johnson says he was in control of the zone all game.

With only four runs on the board, the Westerners were not giving up many big innings. Ashton McCully had not even allowed a hit until the fourth inning. Coach Johnson says the few mistakes the Westerners did make were taken advantage of by Lynnville-Sully.

The Westerners end the year as the top-ranked team in the state tournament and finish in the semifinal round. It is a remarkable achievement for a program that had been to state just once before. Coach Johnson is hopeful that this tournament run can do what it did for the program in 2017 making kids excited to be Westerner baseball players.

Akron-Westfield ends the season with a record of 28-4.
