The Hinton volleyball team comes into 2024 after a strong season that saw them finish as the runner-up in Class 2A at the state tournament. Thankfully, for the Blackhawks, they return the best junior the state of Iowa has to offer in Bailey Boeve. Hinton co-head coach Robin Mohr says Boeve paired with classmate Karlyn Kovarna will still make the Blackhawks a strong team.
The major piece the Blackhawks will need to find a replacement for is at the setter position. Ashlyn Kovarna held that position for the last four years racking up 2,047 assists in her career. Coach Mohr says they are big shoes to fill, but two girls are ready for the challenge.
Last year’s senior class also featured a cadre of hitters that kept teams on their toes. Coach Mohr says that may be the case again this year with a strong group of freshmen coming up to take their spots.
Karlyn Kovarna is looking to take a stepped-up role this season as one of the leaders on the team. Coach Mohr says she has already showed that by stepping up and filling in at a different position on the floor than she was expecting.
Bailey Boeve is also back which should strike fear into opposing teams in northwest Iowa. Boeve picked Creighton University as her college of choice to play volleyball in a couple of years. Coach Mohr says making that decision has allowed her to play much freer heading into this season.
With so many changes to the roster, it is understandable that the Blackhawks will have some changes to lineups and strategies that they need to figure out. Coach Mohr says once that happens, they will be ready to go.
Hinton opens their season on Saturday, August 31 with a tournament in Orange City hosted by Unity Christian.
