The Le Mars Community girls basketball team won their first game of the season in comeback fashion defeating Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln 64-58 on Tuesday night in Council Bluffs.
After an 0-5 start to the year, things were looking rough for the Bulldogs. Head coach Sidney Baumgartner says this one was really important to get.
Le Mars never could take a lead for the first three quarters of the game. The Bulldogs would get opportunities but would squander them away with turnovers or giving up offensive rebounds. The latter was big, and Coach Baumgartner says it was very important that the girls get better at rebounding.
Thankfully, Le Mars got back on the right track. The Bulldogs trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter and proceeded to outscore the Lynx 29-14 in the fourth quarter to win the game. Jaelyn Marienau was the big spark for the Dogs as she scored 18 points in the fourth quarter alone to lead the comeback effort. Coach Baumgartner says she is a leader in many different ways on the court.
Now that the first win is out of the way, the floodgates can hopefully open for more throughout the season. Coach Baumgartner says this was the way she wants her team to play every time.
Le Mars wraps up their pre-holiday season with a home matchup against Sioux City North on Friday night.
