The Gehlen Catholic boys track and field team clinched their third War Eagle Conference title in four years winning the meet in Hawarden on Monday night.
The sport of track is one that can incorporate a lot of individual performances for the good of a team performance. Head coach Jeremy Schindler says the guys have bought into that philosophy, and it shows with a performance like this.
That team aspect of track can lead to some athletes competing in events that they may not be used to or regularly compete in. Coach Schindler says the guys have a good mindset of not always needing to win an event, but they do want to outperform their initial seeding.
Out of the five events the Jays won, Carson Schaecher’s win in the 1600m run was the least shocking. Schaecher has been dominating the mile for the last couple of weeks. Coach Schindler says he has bought into the coaching from Greg Meister, and that has allowed him to dominate events.
The Jays will compete in two more track meets before they go down to Woodbine for a very difficult state qualifying meet. Coach Schindler says the guys turned it up a notch to win the conference, and they will need to find a way to do that again in less than 10 days.
Gehlen Catholic will return to Hawarden on Thursday for their next competition.
