For the second year in a row, the MMCRU boys golf team is state tournament bound after a third-place finish in Lake Mills at Monday’s district meet with a score of 328.
The feat is made a bit more impressive considering the Royals were bumped up a class to 2A this season meaning bigger schools and tougher competition. Head coach Mark Schuttler says the guys were not phased by that at all and competed very well.
The Royals got off to a shaky start but finished well on the back nine to crawl back from being in sixth place midway through the meet to getting into the top three. Coach Schuttler says the guys approached each hole like it was its own match, and the results followed.
Michael Schmillen’s score of 77 was massive in getting the Royals a state berth. It was a stellar score considering the high winds everyone was playing in. Coach Schuttler says the score could have been even better had it not been for a tough couple of holes near the end.
The Royals were new to state last year, and they will be new to state this year in a way. Thankfully, everyone will be in the same boat with the state meets moving to Waterloo from Ames. Coach Schuttler says getting a practice round in will be crucial to knowing what they will be up against next week.
The Class 2A state meet tees off on Tuesday, May 27 in Waterloo at Gates Park Golf Course.
