See Tracks? Think TrainĀ® Week
The Iowa Department of Transportation is observing national rail safety this week with “See Tracks? Think TrainĀ® Week” from September 15-21st. Iowa DOT is partnering with Operation Lifesaver, Inc., to raise awareness about, and to promote, rail safety.
With harvest approaching, and with many roadways intersecting with active and passive rail crossings, rail safety is an important concern with agricultural operations increasing statewide, including here in Plymouth County.
In a statement, Iowa DOT’s rail director Amanda Martin says that the campaign intends to spotlight the importance of making safe choices around rail tracks, and to highlight the increased significance of rail safety during harvest season. Iowa has over four-thousand public railroad crossings, with half of those crossings intersecting with roadways at passive crossings, meaning without lights or bells. Most collisions occur at these crossings.
If you ever find yourself or someone else in a rail accident, look for the blue and white Emergency Notification Signs at every railroad crossing.
