Texas Wesleyan University women’s golf defended their title over the weekend at the Northwest Iowa National Invitational. Head coach Kevin Millikan says having great team chemistry helps make an outcome like this possible.
Makena Junkin was the defending individual champion and finished second individually this year to lead the Rams to the team win. She says that experience from last year helped her greatly this year.
Junkin says team chemistry leads into team encouragement which leads into better play from everybody on the team.
After a few years of drier conditions, Le Mars has been hit with a lot more rain than it is used to making the golf course feel different in certain spots. Coach Millikan says overall the course was prepared very well for a lot of golfers to compete on it.
The Rams have been coming to Le Mars every year that the tournament has been held. Initially, it was as a favor to Dan Gray who they had a great relationship with. Now, Coach Millikan says his team comes back year in and year out because of the support the community gives the tournament.
This meet is very early in the season for NAIA golf teams who will not compete for a national title until May. Coach Millikan says this meet is still valuable though for a big jolt of confidence in his team.
Hannah Ulibarri of The Master’s University won the individual title at this year’s National Invitational Tournament.
