Remsen St. Mary’s girls basketball returns to the court following bus accident

It has been an unimaginable start to the season for the Remsen St. Mary’s girls basketball team this year.

On November 15th, the Hawks went to Sioux City to participate in some preseason scrimmages taking place. On the way back from those scrimmages, the bus they were being transported in was involved in an accident that seriously injured three of the players. Since then, the Hawks have been the center of an outpouring of love and support from people near and fear. Remsen St. Mary’s athletic director Jarrod Schott says that support has been overwhelming at times.

Thankfully, all three seriously injured girls survived and are doing well. Two of them are home from the hospital and one is out of the hospital in a rehab facility continuing the path to recovery. After seeing how the girls were doing, the school had to determine whether or not to have a season. Schott says that process started with a meeting with all involved parties to determine where everyone was at.

The school and involved parties decided that the girls basketball team needed to play this year. Schott outlines that decision.

That decision was not made without some serious questions about whether or not this should be done. After talking to the girls who were not injured in the accident, Schott says they decided that it was ultimately something they should do to support their friends.

Remsen St. Mary’s first game earlier this week ended in a 46-19 win over West Sioux. Requests to support the girls and their families that are dealing with these injuries continues to pour in. Schott says sending your gifts to the St. Mary’s Business Office is a great way to make sure your gift gets to the families that need it.

Schott also wanted to make sure all the emergency personnel who aided the team on that day know how valuable and important they are to this area.

Remsen St. Mary’s next game will be Friday night at South O’Brien.
