Hawarden to host Big Sioux River Days
Starting today, Hawarden will be hosting their Big Sioux River Days celebration. The five-day event will feature a host of activities capped off by the Labor Day parade on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
Julie Coyle, the Hawarden Chamber of Commerce Director, spoke on the background of the long-standing event.
Coyle highlighted some community favorites returning to the festivities this year, including a new event.
The home run derby will also be returning after last year’s success.
On Monday at 1:30, the Labor Day parade will wrap up the celebration, including a pre-parade event.

Citizens Academy registration open
The Le Mars Police Department and the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office announced that applications are now available for this year’s Citizens Academy, a four-week program designed to provide residents with information about their local law enforcement and how it operates.
Participants will learn about daily law enforcement operations and become familiar with the Department’s policing philosophy. The purpose of the Academy is to open doors to the community and provide education to increase communication and understanding between citizens and the police. Topics will include use of force, crime scene investigations, OWI, firearms, police investigations, law, and much more.
This is a free academy open to Plymouth County residents. The Academy will start on Tuesday, October 13th. Applications can be picked up at both the Le Mars Police Department and the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office and must be returned on or before September 30th.

Fire-Rescue shares August reports
Le Mars Fire-Rescue answered 113 calls for service during the month of August, according to their monthly report. That number decreased from 194 calls in July.
The department responded to 57 9-1-1 calls within Le Mars and the surrounding area. 17 investigation calls were answered, 25 special operation calls were received, and 19 requests for services were made to the department. 20 all staff Fire-Rescue calls were made in total.
Other Fire-Rescue operations for August included installation of a camera surveillance system at Fire Station #1, assisting with the hay bale fire in Maurice, and pediatric airway training for the department.
