The Gehlen Catholic softball team opened postseason play shutting out George-Little Rock on Monday night by the score of 7-0.
The Jays had lost five games in a row to finish the regular season and were looking to get going early in the postseason to build the confidence back up. Head coach Tony Kerkvliet says getting a run in the second inning was crucial toward getting some momentum going their way.
Gehlen was helped in their quest to get back in the win column by Kennedy Paulson who pitched all seven innings while allowing three hits, no runs, and striking out 12 batters. Coach Kerkvliet says all of her pitches were working well to get batters out.
When Gehlen played George-Little Rock the first time around, they could not make solid contact against the Mustang pitcher. They were walked 15 times and struck out 11 times in that first meeting. This time, the Jays made better contact and could keep their offense going most of the night with small ball. Coach Kerkvliet says the Jays prepared well for the type of pitching they would see.
Gehlen improves to 11-15 on the season with the win. They will take on Remsen St. Mary’s in the quarterfinal round of the regional tournament. The Jays have had a tough time with the Hawks in recent matchups. Coach Kerkvliet says the win against the Mustangs will hopefully lead to some momentum being built for a good Hawk team.
First pitch is set for 7:00 PM on Wednesday night in Remsen. You can listen to the game on KLEM Radio with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM.
